Alien: Romulus has properly reached theatres by the time you read this. A first consensus won’t be reached for several days more. For the time being, we have one question to consider: will this film break the franchise’s curse?
Since the second film released in 1986, the Alien series has struggled due to an ever-changing cocktail of studio interference, nepotism, the wrong person in the wrong position, marketing-driven-filmmaking, etc. If Hollywood has a sin against art in its repertoire, it was used on the Alien franchise. Even Aliens, a film of such quality and so influential it dominates discussion decades later and changed the face of filmmaking, was initially released in a messy studio-mandated cut that sliced out the soul of the film.
Even if you happen to like one of the later films, the behind-the-scenes chaos, drama, and failures leave a distinct legacy that drags even the better examples down. The harm—physical, emotional, and otherwise—put on real human beings cannot be set aside.
From the early interviews and behind the scenes features, it seems like that cocktail was avoided. It seems like the cast and crew were treated well, and allowed to create a film instead of a product. It seems like the film was created in a similar environment as the first two films.
But it remains to be seen if that’s true.
And it remains to be seen if, even in a world where that is true, if they made a good film.
But, very soon, we will see.
