Sony’s Astro Bot had its own booth at PAX West 2024, showing off some gameplay prior to its PlayStation 5 release on September 6th.
The worlds in Astro Bot are crystal clear and brightly colored. Everything is highly detailed, from the falling leaves of trees, water effects when you swim, and the light that glistens from coins.
Just like with the built in demo years ago, this franchise makes perfect use of haptic feedback on the DualSense controller. With each hop, punch, and interaction resulted in a satisfying rumble. Astro Bot can run, jump, hover, punch, and much more.
The traversal around the environment is seamless, the enemies are endearing, and the other bots to save have quite the personality. In fact, several of them are dressed up as Sony IP. Can you find them all? But in all seriousness, the controls are smooth as butter. Movement is easy and responsive, making platforming a pleasure.
Astro Bot ultimately brings back the sorely missed feeling of old-school 3D mascot platformers of the PlayStation 2 era with modern controls and graphics. While I was already eagerly awaiting the game, this demo firmly cements Sony’s success in this game.
