Our Intrepid Heroes return to the table in this live action adventure in Glasgow. With characters picked at the whim of bingo balls, a surprisingly buff crew came together. A random setting topped off the chaos, and for this first live quangled episode, Ylfa ‘Big Bad Wolf’ Snorgelsson hosted the chaos in the Neverafter.

Ylfa wanders off the path, following the scent of peppermint to find the witch has cooked Hansel and Gretel, but in the midst of the chaos, Liam and his wonderful pig Preston break through. These young, haunted optimists immediately bond.

As fire slams into peanuts, the quangling time opens another door, bringing Rowan and Ricky through to the witch’s cottage. Countering an attempted banishment, our faerie actress fights a transformation as the Neverafter attempts to change the bard to fit the world’s fairy standard.

Barry 6 is the last to join the fray. His immediate cool uncle energy draws both Ylfa and Liam’s admiration. While the clone barbarian questions who the good guys are after Rowan turns the witch into a milk-sheep monstrosity, the immediate himbo connection between Barry and Ricky clears the air as Hansel and Gretel reanimate, but a voice from another world speaks through them.

To nobody’s shock, the catalyst for this temporal mess is Arthur Aguefort, renowned proponent of chronomancy, who with his daughter, Ayda, explains the situation to our players. The quickest solution requires Hansel and/or Gretel to blow up. As our heroes aren’t willing to risk their lives, they have no choice but to find and defeat a dragon, feeding the beast’s heart to a pig in the witch’s cottage to undo the Time Quangle.

As the rest of the group race to confront the dragon, the orange hatted fairy appears, reaching out to Rowan. Unwilling to be drawn into the drama of another realm, Rowan dimension-doors away to the fight.

In a realm where rivers flow with water, a boy and dragon made of candy are under near constant threat of instant death. The group confront the dragon, and Ylfa wrestles, grappling the dragon into the well. Her attempts to give the dragon a swirly fail.

With its head caught in the well, the dragon unleashes its breath weapon, managing to launch itself and Ylfa into the sky as it vaporizes the water, and like an angry kettle, the well whistles before exploding.

Defeating the dragon, the group unleashes a magical cricket, allowing the spirit to live on as the cinnamon candy body melts and oozes. Claiming she had a vision, Adaine appears, providing shrimp and a pool skimmer before running back off. However, Ylfa volunteers to dive into the water-logged corpse instead, swimming through the cinnamon corpse to retrieve the dragon’s heart.

As Ylfa emerges with the heart, Nara returns, tempting the group to use the dragon’s heart to make a wish rather than to their original realms. The orange fairy has lost her hotness. If Lou Wilson were here, he’d be so disappointed.

They destroy her and her orange hat, but Gretel returns, King Prilbus reveals himself, shooting at Barry. Liam takes him out, freeing Gretel to be possessed by Arthur Aguefort once more.

The group convinces Preston to eat the heart, creating a strange cinnamon, cheesy smoothie. A third eye opens on the peppermint pig’s head. As he speaks for the first, Preston unquangles time, setting things back to right.

Highlights

Rowan’s constant struggles against being a fairy godmother and her clear disinterest in anything to do with children puts her at odds with the fun / caring older brother/uncle roles that Ricky and Barry take on with Ylfa and Liam. From her dry dismissal of the orange fairy to her magical face off with the witch, separates her so wonderfully from the endless optimism of the rest of the party.

Her disgust does nothing to prevent Liam from following Ricky back to New York, and his enthusiasm ends up convincing Ylfa and Barry to head there as well.

Final Score (4 out of 5 Stars)

This quangle of temporal madness opened the door to numerous cameos, but while it was a thrilling adventure, two bits dragged it down a star for me. First of all, Lou Wilson wasn’t in attendance, and his booming charismatic presence was sourly missed. Secondly, there was way too much pink eye. I was solidly with Rowan on the matter, and it sabotaged the heart-warming wholesomeness of Liam’s and Ylfa’s immediate bond.

I’m excited to find out how they continue this insanity. The second episode will be released on September 19th, but the remainder will wait until December, coming out after the new season of Magic & Misfits.
