Hey, Listen!
The Legend of Zelda franchise is known for memorable companions: Navi, Tatl, Midna, King of Red Lions, Fi, and more. Companions serve as a guide to the player and usually play a role on the story. With a lack of companion in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Tri is a welcome sight in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. However, how well does Tri hold up as a companion in this franchise?
[Author’s Note: This is a spoiler-free banter]

In the opening of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, this adorable ball of…light (?) named Tri follows Zelda after losing Link and grants her the Echo ability to help her escape imprisonment at Hyrule Castle.
According to Tri, their friends can help close these mysterious, yet ever-growing rifts. By accompanying Tri, Zelda can set out and search for her father, the King, and protect her people. This creates a symbiotic relationship between the two.
From a gameplay standpoint, Tri isn’t terribly invasive like Navi; however, Tri does intervene on occasion to help provide context and next steps. To me, the level of involvement seems reasonable, although I wish there was an ability to summon Tri and chat with them, either for clues or some fun facts like with Navi, Midna, or Fi.

From a design and personality standpoint, Tri is pretty simple and “superficial”. Again, since this is a spoiler-free Banter, we will remove the end game information about Tri. Tri is a “ball of light” with triangles floating from its top. Their conversations with Zelda feel pretty robotic and informational, akin to Fi. I do wish Tri had a bit more personality like Tatl or Midna. A little personality goes a long way with character development, and I feel that Tri isn’t going to be one of the memorable ones. Tri is a serviceable companion, and relatively non-invasive, but they leave a lot to be desired.
