Capcom released part four of a documentary series covering the development of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. The first part showcased the surprising practical effects that were filmed and placed in the game. The locations players explore and fight through are real, photographed models. The firework and flame effects are real: recorded and edited into the game. The second and third part explored the game’s scanned costumes, motion capture performances, and a soundtrack that was partially recorded in the woods.
“Because we live in a world where many things are created with CG and computers,” said director Shuichi Kawata in the first part of the series, “we wanted to bring a realistic touch to elevate the good and inspiring parts—even with some limitations—to incorporate reality, sensation, and excitement into this game.”
This practical ethos, incorporating reality, sensation and excitement, extends to food. Throughout the game, the player can collect offerings for the shrine maiden, Yoshiro. All of these offerings are real pastries, with emphasis on the real. Each one was made by Tsuruya Yoshinobu Sweets Artisan, a traditional confectionary which has operated in Kyoto since 1803, then 3D-scanned by Capcom.
“When I first heard about this, I wondered how a Capcom game was going to incorporate sweets. I thought, ‘There’s no way they’d make them into weapons, right?’” said Masahiko Mizue, who created the sweets seen in the game. “Rather than preference, the policy of our company is [that] we first and foremost aim to make something good. We’ve promoted this policy since long ago. We spare no effort for each ingredient, creating each piece carefully one by one. This amount of care is just common knowledge. So it’s not preference. It’s just what we have always done. … We aim to create something that is new but still aligns with the past. I think of that as our duty as confectioners, as artisans.”
The developers included both famous and less often seen traditional sweets, incorporating the four seasons of a year and what confections would embody those seasons.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is available now, with a demo on most platforms.
