I’ve played Pokémon Trading Card Game since the 90’s. The card game released originally in October 1996 and since I received my first deck the Haymaker, I have been interested in this format style in the Pokémon universe. Many days of collecting, constructing, and combat with these paper-based Pokémon were amazingly fun. For me the peak was the release of Pokémon TCG for the Game Boy Color in 1998. From that point forward I have wanted a similar experience that gave me that peak enjoyment.
On October 30th, 2024, I downloaded Pokémon TCG Pocket on my phone. Hoping that it would be a fun experience, and you know what it totally is. After playing the Game Boy Color game I had been yearning for something that would continue or move the genre along for myself. I know that we had the game on OS X and Windows since 2011 as well as the iPad versions in 2014, but it felt the same as when I played it originally with the physical cards. I wanted something different, and I believe we might have got this in Pokémon TCG Pocket will give us a refreshed experience.
With this new format of Pokémon TCG, I feel excited to play once again after years of not playing the game. With that refreshed excitement with this game, I’m wondering if we will get to finally experience this on a Nintendo console. We saw that Nintendo brought Pokemon TCG for the Game Boy Color to Nintendo Switch Online making it available to a large audience who may have not played it before. This, I believe is a big step to getting this new mobile game on to the console, either the Switch or its successor. Either way it would promote the game further.
In just 3 days of launching, it had been downloaded over 10 million times. Numbers like this will surely promote the ongoing upkeep, promotions, and consistency that we hope for in games. Couple this with a release on console you could open this up for potentially a much more robust and worthwhile experience for millions of fans. You could allow, trading, collecting, and battling to crossover between the platforms and make it a great addition to the free software you can utilize. DeNA who makes the game would be able to create a seamless experience with the money it generates and allow them to focus on fun experiences for all.
What do you think about the new Pokémon TCG Pocket application? Have you played Pokémon TCG in the past? What do you think about this version of the trading card game? Are you a collector or a battling enthusiast when it comes to the game? Let us know your thoughts on this topic.
