Geoff Keighly announced the nominees for the 10th annual Video Game Awards that will premier December 12th, 2024. To no surprise, there were some well-deserved nominations and questionable decisions. Who were the real winners and losers from this year’s list of nominees?
Let’s Hear it for the Indies!
A major win comes from LocalThunk’s Balatro. This roguelike deck builder took the community by storm that not many other roguelikes or deck builders have in the past. Not only is it nominated for Best Indie and Best Debut Indie, it also landed nominations in Best Game Direction, Best Mobile Game, and even Game of the Year. What huge representation from “the little guy”.
I also want to shout out other indie titles that made a few nominations such as Neva (Best Art Direction, Games for Impact, and Best Indie) and Animal Well (Best Indie and Best Debut Indie).
PlayStation’s Secret Weapon: Astrobot
Astrobot cleared many nomination categories–seven to be exact–and this is the quality game that Sony really needed to give PlayStation a big W. Also, not only was Astro Bot one of the most nominated games, but PlayStation is the publisher with the highest nominations!

Final Fantasy Domination
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth may have released way back in February, but it was far from forgotten. It also stole seven nominations (including Briana White’s performance) as ties with Astro Bot as game with the most nominations.

The Imbalance that DLCs Bring
Game of the Year 2022’s Elden Ring is a masterpiece well deserving of its award; however, the inclusion of DLC as candidates for GOTY has left many people with mixed feelings.
So, while Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a fantastic DLC, we aren’t sure if The Video Game Awards committee made the right choice here instead of created a new Best DLC category.

Ubisoft, Really?
The team behind the critically acclaimed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was disbanded because it “failed to meet expectations“. And yet here we are with two well-earned nominations of Innovations in Accessibility and Best Action/Adventure. The high expectations must be reconsidered by many video game titans.
What Veilguard?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard only squeaked by with one nomination for Innovation in Accessibility. It’s disappointing given a decent Metacritic Score of about 83. The dev team paid great homage to the Dragon Age lore that should’ve been acknowledged. Was it because it released on the later side for nominations (October 31st)? I wouldn’t think that would be a fitting excuse.
