SYNOPSIS:
Silent Hill 2, perhaps the more beloved title in the franchise by Konami, originally released 2001. After over twenty years, fans can relive this survival horror title with modern graphics and controls thanks to the Bloober Team. The Bloober Team is known for The Medium, Blair Witch, and the Layers of Fear games.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Silent Hill 2 follows James Sunderland who receives a mysterious letter from his late wife, Mary, calling him to the resort town of Silent Hill. When he arrives, James is met with nothing but fog and grotesque creatures. Only a few other humans are also in Silent Hill–Angela, Eddie, a flirtatious Maria (who looks and sounds like Mary), and a little girl named Laura.

James fights his way through a decrepit apartment, hospital, jail, and labyrinth, all of which transcends reality. We are left to question what is real and what isn’t. Is this all in James’ head? Are these manifestations of something darker within? What will James find when he eventually reaches Toluca Lake where Mary is supposedly waiting for him?
Silent Hill 2 is a study into the human psyche as James and others explore their inner demons in a near-flawless psychological horror video game.
ANALYSIS:
Gameplay
The Bloober Team has modified many aspects of Silent Hill 2‘s gameplay while still honoring its core mechanics. For example, fixed angles and tank controls are gone, replaced by a third person over-the-shoulder perspective.
The combat also received a face-lift; however, it still isn’t a power-fantasy like roundhouse kicking enemies as Leon Kennedy in the Resident Evil 4 remake. James is equipped with a melee weapon, various firearms (pistol, shotgun, then a rifle). You are able to run, dodge, and perform a quick turn. I played on Standard combat mode, and while combat isn’t terribly hard, many enemies are bullet sponges. With that, it is quite vital to conserve your resources–forcing you to pick and choose your battles–literally and figuratively.
Speaking of modes, you also can adjust the puzzle difficulty. Yes, puzzles are still important in Silent Hill 2 remake. Most of them are intuitive and provide a well-balanced experience.
All of these enhanced experiences are jam-packed in larger areas to explore. While linear in nature, there is a lot to explore in each section of the game. You are encouraged to snoop around, break glass, and sniff out bits of lore and/or Easter eggs…if you dare.
The level designs are pretty basic, with long hallways and several locked doors. Puzzles force you to run back and forth often, but the Silent Hill franchise hasn’t been known for top-tier level design, so this isn’t surprising. The added detail to the environment does help mitigate the pains of backtracking.

Graphics and Sound
The Bloober Team really nailed the graphic enhancements in the remake. The characters are realistic, and the monsters are that much more grotesque. Everything felt dirty, rusty, and at times, just downright nasty.

Silent Hill 2 is naturally foggy or dark; however, sometimes it just felt way too dark. The flashlight felt like a pathetic little flame swallowed by a black hole, and yet, I feel like that is intentional in this case.
Sound design is also on point, which is key to any good Silent Hill game. The radio static warns you of unseen enemies. Groans, scratching, and scuttling off camera really pulls you into the game, and fast-paced tunes during a fight keeps your adrenaline rushing through your veins.
I also wanted to call out the caliber of voice acting. Luke Roberts nails James Sunderland in the tone and delivery of his lines. Even the grunts and shouts felt authentic and…almost desperate. Adding to the wonderful motion-capture, Luke brings James to life in the most authentic way possible.

Gianna Kiehl voices Angela in yet another stellar casting choice. Angela is a timid, confused, and skittish character, and I can feel the emotion through Kiehl’s performance.
Lastly, I want to shout out Salome Gunnarsdottir, the actress voicing both Mary and Maria. She splits her talents between the similar, yet so different, women. Since Maria is a more forward and flirtatious iteration of Mary, it makes sense the same actress voices both characters, and Salome nails each personality.
FINAL SCORE:
The Silent Hill 2 remake was done masterfully, thanks to the Bloober Team. In fact, the quality of the remake parallels that of the recent Resident Evil remakes of 2, 3, and 4.
Improved gameplay mechanics and graphics bring Silent Hill 2 into the modern age while still honoring the original story that put the game on the map in the first place.
The graphics are beautifully grotesque, and the voice acting and the sound design makes me feel like I’m walking alongside James. The Silent Hill 2 remake is a shining example of a top-tier psychological horror, and with several ending possibilities, there is also significant replay value.
