Crazy Harke’s Amazing Emporium of Total Retro Madness’ Harke discovered an undocumented edutainment CD-ROM: The Forest Adventure, from developers Plan-It3, and producers the Stewards of Family Farms, Ranches, and Forests and Naturally Interactive, INC.
If you are familiar with edutainment, or your school’s PC lab, the game is about what you expect: more of an interactive lesson plan than a game, you click from screen to screen to find hidden facts. You then answer questions about what you’ve learned on topics ranging from what you can learn about a tree’s life from its rings, the amount of carbon a tree processes per year, and the history of logging.
Harke also breaks down how software like this was made, creating a simple program in Macromedia Director 5 (1996), and filming live footage which is then converted into the style and format a multimedia CD-ROM would have used.
In this video, we embark on a journey to uncover The Forest Adventure, a rare and mysterious educational CD-ROM game from 1997. This forgotten piece of retro software, developed by Plan-It3 and backed by forestry associations, was designed for Windows 3.1 and classic Mac systems. With almost no information available online, this may be the first time The Forest Adventure is explored in detail!
