Introduction
The Edge of Sleep television series is most known for featuring Youtube star, Markiplier; however, this 2024 psychological thriller has been around for a few years. The story originated from a podcast, produced by QCode back in 2019, which also starred Markiplier. Since then, The Edge of Sleep has undergone novelization to expand its universe as well as this tv show that aired October 15th on Amazon Prime.
This adaptation is directed by Corey Adams, written by Jake Emmanuel and Willie Block. Mark Fischbach is not only one of the executive producers but also a leading actor.
The show lasts approximately 20 minutes per episode with six episodes total.
Synopsis
As mentioned above, The Edge of Sleep is a psychological thriller that revolves around Dave Torres, a security guard that works third shift, who witnesses a strange and terrifying phenomenon where people pass away in their sleep.
As he and his friend Matteo navigate this main storyline, other layers are peeled back; Dave has a longstanding history of night terrors and parasomnia. The nightmares always feature mysterious Dream People, a grotesque elephant-like monster, and the occasional whale. Lastly, there are hints and references to pharma and medication that leave the viewer feeling quite uneasy.
As the episodes progress, Dave and Matteo partner up with a nurse named Linda as well as Dave’s ex-girlfriend Katie. They make several attempts to reach out to any potential survivors, uncover the mystery behind the deaths, and find a way to survive before their bodies give into exhaustion.
One particular scene unveils an unnatural mark on a cadaver’s brain tissue–a triangle–that Dave recognizes. He realizes his night terrors may be connected to the phenomenon, and he then convinces the group to travel to this mysterious island. Dave believes the Dream People are located here, and this is where they can find a solution; however, it is never that easy.

The Edge of Sleep ends in a cliffhanger, one of which that peels back yet another layer of the mystery and unearths a new, deadly challenge.
Analysis
The Edge of Sleep leverages powerful and abstract imagery, along dramatic shots and bright colors, and blends it with quick, to-the-point episodes to deliver an out-of-the-box experience in six episodes.
Throughout the season, you will witness several flashbacks and dreams. Each one delivers memorable characters and meaningful plot points without spoiling too much. The way the elephant creature and Dream People are shown made me question their purposes and relationship to why everyone passed away in their sleep. The connections are woven in subtly, and yet, I feel most viewers can predict that Dave Torres’ night terrors are somehow related to the phenomenon. The true mystery is the how and the why.

The cinematography is quite impressive as well as the casting. Markiplier has done a bang-up job as Torres, painting the protagonist as an awkward, dry, and troubled soul. You can see it in his face and hear it in his voice that it takes every ounce of energy to mask his sanity in the world despite all that he’s gone through as a child.
Franz Drameh (playing Matteo Leon), Eve Harlow (playing Linda Russo), and Lio Tipton (playing Katie Dowd) also were a strong foundation of actors and actresses that left me rooting for each and every one of them.

The final plot twist in the last episode is one that I feel may be divisive to viewers as the story rips out your false sense of safety and tacs on the concept of a “chosen one”–Dave–to help prepare for a battle against an evil force. Some may appreciate where The Edge of Sleep goes, while some may not. From a critical standpoint, it does leave room for another season with plenty of mystery to pique our interest. On the flip side, I feel that six twenty-minutes episodes were too brief to satiate such a twist.
While the show was well produced, well written, and well shot, the plot moves at a breakneck speed. It makes it difficult to enjoy and sink our teeth into this world consisting of several deep and complex layers.
The Edge of Sleep leaves us focusing more on the supernatural; however, I am still curious how Cynagen, a pharmaceutical company, and a drug called Modafalyst plays a role, if at all. The blend of science and fantasy is an intriguing one, and I was sad that I blew through all six episodes in one sitting.

FINAL SCORE:
The Edge of Sleep is a quick and wicked trip. Markiplier does an outstanding job as protagonist Dave Torres. In six episodes, we dissect (pun intended) his inner psyche and past while a massive primary plot unfurls.
As mentioned above, there is a unique blend of realism (through pharmaceuticals and the possibility of a pandemic) and fantasy (through the realization that the Dream People and this elephant monster are real), and I felt we could have used more than six twenty-minute episodes.
I recommend this show to those that appreciate strong and dramatic cinematography and psychological thrillers with a fantasy twist. The Edge of Sleep is a quick series, so it does not overstay its welcome, and that is a double-edged sword and could make the audience hungry for more. Given the genre and brevity, the best kind of viewer would be the one would is able to suspend their beliefs to indulge in this sick and twisted mystery.
