With the launch of the VR-game Alien: Rogue Incursion from Survios, character Zula Hendricks has once again taken center stage in the Alien universe. First appearing in the Dark Horse Comics run Aliens: Defiance in 2016, the Colonial Marine has been a fan favorite.
Since then, Hendricks has appeared in seven storylines within the Alien Expanded Universe, including Alien: Rogue Incursion; and she’s set to make an eighth appearance in the upcoming novel Alien: Seventh Circle, which releases January 7.
With appearances in a game and novel in such a short window of time, it’s worth considering whether the fandom is ready for Zula Hendricks to become the new face of the franchise. Of course, with the success (albeit controversial) of Alien: Romulus, Cailee Spaeny’s Rain Caradine will likely occupy that role–and for good reason. Spaeny is a phenomenal actor, and her on-screen partnership with David Jonsson is iconic. While the powers that be will likely want to capitalize on their success (an announced sequel is on the way), many fans still long for a return to the Colonial Marines.
Fede Álvarez rightly focused on horror for his soft reboot of the franchise; but perhaps there’s room for an action-oriented follow up akin to James Cameron’s Aliens. If so, a character like Zula Hendricks, who constantly struggles with debilitating back pain but always manages to overcome the odds, is exactly the right kind of personality to revisit the Colonial Marines storylines.
