It’s that time of year again where we await the release of the Game of The Year Nominees, and we go online to vote for our favorite. We anticipate that the games we have played throughout the year will pop up in one or more of the categories so that we can give the game we think deserves some recognition. But what happens when a game that was released prior to the year in which the Game of the Year is represented with new downloadable content that requires the base game to play it takes up one of the six slots of nominees?
This is exactly what the case is for the 2024 Game Awards Game of the Year award has presented us with. The nominations are the following:
- Astro Bot
- Balatro
- Black Myth: Wukong
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
- Metaphor: ReFantazio
The games stated are the best of the best according to a jury of people who voted for this list. The problem some people have is that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has been selected as one of the six contenders for Game of the Year award. This is DLC that was introduced to us this year; however, the game came out in 2022, which some would see as a continuing service or add on and should be placed in a different category. I can see why this would cause controversy and would love to see what the explanation to this inclusion is.
Some people feel like another game should sit in this spot such as Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom or Animal Well. Others think that if something is well loved and is sitting at the top of place like Metacritic it should have representation. All this is fine and good to discuss but what needs to be addressed is the rules in which a game is nominated and selected for the list and if the people running the selection process is fine included this then the rules are set, doesn’t mean you have to like it, but use your vote for another game if that is how you want to voice your opinion and make future changes.
Last year there was controversy over the game Dave the Diver about being included in the best indie game category. People were upset that it had been included in the indie category based on budget and team size. Though a big team with a decent amount of financial backing existed around this project the game was published and developed by Mintrocket. Mintrocket, a subsidiary of Nexon, is still considered an independent studio because triple AAA company did not fund or distribute the game. I believe that communication is the best policy in these cases to help clear up people’s festering thoughts and beliefs.
Whatever your opinion is about this controversial matter it shows that we are all passionate about the games we consume. If you’re fine with it, vote for the game, if you are not, use your vote in another way. Either way change can only occur when enough people bring up the issue that they see in this category.
