The countdown is on for Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated. Releasing December 12th, this remake of a beloved indie classic evokes the spirit of the heyday of JRPGs, but in a more streamlined package.

Released in 2010 for the Xbox Live Arcade, Breath of Death VII was both a parody and a homage to the JRPG genre. Taking place in a world in which humanity was wiped out after nuclear war, Breath of Death features an all-undead cast including a mute skeleton named Dem, the ghostly Sara, Lita the vampire, and the zombie prince Erik.
The title has a turn-based combat system that is simple to learn while having depth, and a story that is fleshed out without overstaying its welcome.
Developed and published by Zeboyd Digital Entertainment, Breath of Death VII was the top-rated indie game on the Xbox Live Arcade at the termination of the service, and it currently sits at a “very positive” rating on Steam.

The remake, Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated,” developed and published by Shadow Layer Games, promises to bring the nearly decade-and-a-half old game a fresh coat of paint with a new 16-bit art style. Additionally the remade version will have a new soundtrack from HyperDuck SoundWorks, who has composed for a number of other notable games, including Dust: An Elysian Tale.
This in addition to “game modes, quality of life features, and enhancements to the UI and controls.” The remake brings Breath of Death VII into the modern day, and allows fans a new way to play the game, while being more accessible than before.
Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated is being released on December 12th, and will release for $5 on PC via Steam.
