Steam has several big sales a year but the Winter sale has always been my favorite. I have some friends and we’ll take advantage of the sale to get each other Christmas presents.
But besides that, for me, this is the biggest and best sale that the Steam store has every year. While we don’t have the official start date of the Winter 2024 sale, we know that it will likely start between a week to 10 days before Christmas.
Like the rest of your Christmas shopping, you can prepare to take full advantage of the sale. And here are some of my favorite tips to do just that.
1. Prepare Your Budget

This goes two ways. How much are you able to spend on friends? How much do you want to sit aside for yourself?
When I go into the sale, I go in with a budget in mind. Sometimes, I look at Wishlists and see how many games I can get for a certain amount of money. Other times, I look to see what’s on their list and get something bigger for them.
On the other side of the coin, I love taking advantage of the sale to knock some items off of my wishlist. How much am I willing to spend? If something I’ve been eyeing for a bit is on a good sale, is that budget flexible?
These are things to consider when preparing for the sale.
2. Organize Your Wishlist

Did you know that like your Steam Library, you can organize your Wishlist?
Take mine for example. I do my best ot remember to update it throughout the year when I add things but at this point, it has over 100 items on it.
There’s a box to the bottom left of the box with a number. You can put a number in and it will move it up to that spot on your list. It also gives you a lot of the basic information on the game itself.
Organizing this is useful for when friends come to your wishlist. They’ll see that you have priorities and that helps them when they make decisions.
3. Do Your Research

Have you ever checked out your Discovery Queue on Steam? It’s available under the Store tab. Steam creates one of these a day with games it may think you’ll enjoy.
I love going through my queue to see what it suggests. Sometimes it’s a bust and there’s nothing there. But other times, I find some hidden gems. Go through this and find some new games. When sales like the Winter Sale come up, you might snag them for a great deal.
4. Be Open To The Unexpected

Every sale page has a page just like the one above. On it, it highlights everything on sale. I suggest going to the page and scrolling through the sales.
Steam will highlight the big name and popular games that are on sale. But they’ll also allow you to sort by genre to find something specific.
This is a valuable tool to find a hidden gem in the sale.
I’m eagerly awaiting this year’s Steam Winter Sale. I’m tweaking my wishlist, making plans, and I’m excited to see what the next couple of weeks bring.
