Digital Extremes, developers of Warframe, released an animated prologue to the upcoming expansion Warframe: 1999. “The Hex” is animated by British animation studio THE LINE.
The arthouse has previously produced music videos for the Gorillaz songs “Humility” and “Song Machine” and short films like Heavenly Vessel. The team has also produced animated trailers for games like Marvel Snap, Overwatch, and League of Legends.
Venla Linna, the film’s director, spoke about the similarities between their work and Digital Extreme’s.
“Exploring a world like Warframe through 2D animation was an incredibly fulfilling experience,” said Linna. “We were immediately drawn to the vastness of the universe that has been built, the depth of its storytelling, and the unapologetic stylishness of its characters. We strongly felt we had to match the care that Digital Extremes and its community puts into Warframe, and in the process of doing so truly came to be its biggest fans. I hope that by helping set the tone for what’s coming later in the month, we can introduce this new chapter of Warframe with the millennium scale fanfare it deserves.”
Rebecca Ford, Warframe‘s Creative Director, was similarly effusive.
“We’ve been a huge fan of THE LINE’s work for years and knew they would absolutely be the perfect partner,” said Ford. “Warframe: 1999 is one of the most ambitious things our studio has tried in almost 12 years of the game’s evolution. We’re always looking for ways to authentically share our atmosphere and aesthetic with players out of game as well as in-game. This evocative short marks the last gift we have to give before the next narrative chapter of Warframe launches later this month!”
Warframe: 1999 will be available in December, 2024. “The Hex” animated short is available on YouTube. Digital Extremes previously released a digital comic 3D-printable miniatures to promote the expansion.
