I have enjoyed many platformers over the years, from Mario, to Donkey Kong, to Rayman, and Kirby. They have plenty to offer and many unique qualities to make them exciting. I have grown to love each evolution of various series. It was great to see the software reflect the capabilities of the hardware. For many Nintendo is one of the lead companies in this genre and with a new console generation in the works I think Nintendo could really excel especially if they take some notes from 2024 Game of the Year Astro Bot.
Plenty of great games came out in 2024 and lots of opinions on what game was the most deserving. When put to the vote Astro Bot came out on top, showcasing that fun and innovative platforming can take home the prize. After hearing about how much fun people were having with it, I ended up getting to play it to see for myself. The experience was fun, challenging, and addictive. All things I enjoy in a platforming type experience. This got me thinking about the next generation of Nintendo and what they might focus on or do differently in future IP’s.
We all love both side scrolling and 3D open world Mario games and while playing Astro Bot I really thought about why it was successful and giving me and my family such a great feeling while playing. The feeling I had felt before in other games as well, like Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, and Nintendo Land. Each one had some sort of collaboration with other franchises or a sense of community. Combined with top-notch gameplay, excellent design, and beautiful art and music it made for something special. This made me want something like this in a new Mario, Donkey Kong, or other IP by Nintendo. I want a celebration of gaming that hits all the right notes in a 3D open world with various IPs, characters, and third-party support that celebrates games like Super Smash Brothers, but in an entirely new genre.
People like nostalgia, collaboration, and fun. Throw that into a blender and potentially you get a combination that has an interesting take. You only will find success with all those ingredients, plus passion, talent, and determination. Nintendo has all these things, much like Team Asobi, they just need to do their own thing but also keep a collective mind set on something new and exciting. Imagine a new Mario game that celebrates past games, past rivals, current technology, and vibrant art aesthetics. You could really change up the feel of the game. I also pictured a wildly different Donkey Kong game that looks and plays a lot like Astro Bot. I think the haptic feedback would be so much fun. Plenty of innovative and creative space to utilize.
Whatever Nintendo decides to do I’m sure it will be fun as usual, but how can they strive to make game of the year content? Astro Bot is a console exclusive that achieved this which because of the genre I am impressed. It takes a lot of heart and soul to create something that the majority can see, and I wish the best of luck to Team Asobi and all software developers with a high passion for quality.
What did you think of Astro Bot? What kind of games do you want to see come to Nintendo’s next console and do you expect a higher pedigree of games in this next generation? What are your thoughts on the subject?
