Professional wrestling has had a resurgence over the past four years, making now the perfect time to get into the world of WWE.
Starting on Jan. 6, Monday Night Raw will stream on Netflix live every Monday night. This ends a longstanding relationship between WWE’s flagship show and the USA Network, moving the show to streaming for the first time ever.
As mentioned, the Jan. 6 show on Netflix is the perfect time to see what this crazy world of professional wrestling is all about.
For one, WWE has stacked the show with premium live event-caliber matches. This will showcase what WWE and professional wrestling does best: blend athletics with scripted storytelling.
Before I go any further, I feel the need to clarify a few things. Yes, professional isn’t legitimate sport in the sense of true competition. That doesn’t make the shows “fake,” but rather scripted like any other TV show.
What make wrestling so unique is it is done in a live setting and blurs the lines remarkably well between the show and real life. Not much in entertainment does this as well as pro wrestling.
WWE is the top promotion for this and has been doing it nationally for over 40 years. Many probably remember its biggest boom during the late ’90s and the early ’00s.
This time was called the Attitude Era and featured many stars that went mainstream, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle.
If you haven’t watched since the Attitude Era, Monday Night Raw on Netflix provides a perfect chance to return.
If you’re looking for solid storytelling, you will have your fill.
Roman Reigns will face his cousin Solo Sikoa in what’s mean a months-long feud over the leadership of their Samoan family known as The Bloodline. CM Punk and Seth Rollins will meet for the first time in their heated rivalry that has brewed for over year and has blurred the lines between reality and show.
With Monday Night Raw moving to Netflix, these matches will strike a balance between rewarding longtime viewers while being accessible to newcomers. Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque has done a great job at refreshing the storytelling and I have faith he will make this show good.
Professional wrestling is hot right now. This has been baffling to many critics since a lot of them don’t understand what WWE and other wrestling promotions actually are.
In short, it’s athletic theater presented as legitimate sport, forcing the audience to suspend disbelief. It can be cheesy and hokey, but it can also be gritty and gripping.
If any of that sounds interesting to you, come over to Netflix this Monday night to see what the fuss is all about. There will be a show that is geared toward newcomers that will highlight all WWE has the offer.
