Recently Nintendo unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 with a trailer. The trailer of course shows the basics of the new console, with ports, kickstand, screen size, and new joy cons. These basics are all expected, and they also shed some light to previous rumors and leaks that were circling the media outlets. Most of these leaks were spot on, but one rumor in particular, piqued my curiosity.
During the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal trailer at one point the joy cons turn onto their sides and run along the surface like they were mice chasing one another. Though nothing was physically leaning towards how it would work, nor have any text on screen explaining what the feature entails, it definitely highlights the familiarity of a computer mouse.
Earlier rumors in the weeks prior to the Switch 2 reveal there were talks of a laser embedded in the controller that resembled a mouse which would detect movement and was located on the rail side of the joy con. Also some slider pads were also mentioned for easy gliding on surfaces. Fast forward to the trailer and we can visually see these details leading me to believe the rumors are true. If this is to be believed we could see a major uptick in RTS games.
With partnerships from companies like Microsoft that have been both speculated and confirmed like Call of Duty, I can see a significant haven for RTS games from them as well as other companies. The first thing that came to mind was Age of Empires, Halo Wars, Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo games that would thrive in this hybrid environment. Partnerships will increase if this is true. Nintendo themselves could benefit from current IPs like Pikmin, Advanced Wars, or even Animal Crossing. I know plenty of indie games as well that would get benefit from the option to use a mouse. This could really boost the genre on a console.
Did you watch the Switch 2 reveal? Do you think that we are getting mouse support? Would you play more RTS games on a console that includes both a mouse and mouse support right out of the box? What games would you like to see on Switch 2 using this concept? Let us know your thoughts on the topic.
