Dungeons & Dragons has been conquering pretty much every medium available, from streaming television to video games to our YouTube feeds. Its foray into pinball machines is nothing new—enthusiasts will likely remember the 1987 machine from Bally Midway. But as with the rest of the franchise, D&D’s pinball presence is getting a major upgrade this year.
Today, Stern Pinball announced the launch of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: The Tyrant’s Eye, a new pinball machine celebrating 50 years of the world-renowned game. The machine’s launch trailer shows off its high-tech specs, including an animatronic Rath the Relentless, “the most advanced animatronic mech in pinball.”
Players will take on the roles of members of the Dragonshield Guild, fighting against the dragon queen Tiamat. Optional integration with Stern’s Insider Connected app will allow players to save and track campaign progress, character XP, and inventory, as well as cooperative play. The campaign features branching paths, weekly items, and extra characters who can be unlocked once the main campaign is completed.
The machine also has massive talents attached to every stage of production. The cabinet features art by Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: the Gathering artist Vincent Proce, and a soundtrack by prolific video game composer Chris Velasco. Michael Dorn voices Rath the Relentless; the rest of the stacked cast list includes Kevin Smith, Luke Gygax, Chris Prynoski, Brendon Small, Gerard Way, Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, and Marisha Ray.
