On January 19th, the popular mobile game Marvel Snap was banned across the United States alongside the social media powerhouse, TikTok. Second Dinner, the developers of Marvel Snap, confirmed it’s return however, and promises stability in the coming future.
The ” Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act” was enforced on Sunday, January 19th. This act sought to remove applications from “unreliable” sources from app stores across the United States. Marvel Snap was included in the ban, which took both players of the game and developers, Second Dinner, by surprise.

A recent post by Second Dinner confirms it’s return alongside their plan of finding a new publisher. By doing so, Marvel Snap wouldn’t be eligible to be banned by the act and continue to be played in the United States. The developer’s also promise to bring in a “new era” for the game, leaving fans speculating on what’s to come.
With strict regulations on foreign affairs in place, the gaming industry becomes directly affected as well. With Second Dinner needing to find another publisher for Marvel Snap as an example, other foreign titles may face a couple extra obstacles if they plan to release a game in the United States.
I personally believe that experiencing video games from across the globe is vital. The medium can work as a bridge between different communities to connect over a shared perspective.
The broader effects of the “Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act” might establish an example for other foreign-developed games looking to release to a U.S. market. Even if Marvel Snap’s comeback is inevitable, the act could still leave foreign developer’s discouraged when it comes to finding the right publisher to avoid risks of getting banned.
