The video game industry has been hurting for a couple of years now, with thousands of layoffs and studio closures. Much like the song, “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler, gamers around the world were clinging onto the barest threads of hope for something good to happen in the industry. Then, in March 2025, the formerly closed down Game Informer has announced their return!
If you haven’t heard, Gunzilla Games has purchased the rights to Game Informer with the intent of preserving their identity as an independent editorial outlet. This is an incredible surprise given the company-eat-company world. Moreover, the staff consists entirely of its original members prior to their dissolution by GameStop in 2024. With full support of Gunzilla Games, Game Informer, Inc. intends to continue publishing both print and digital magazines. In fact, if you hop onto their website, Game Informer, Inc. has provided content they covered even during the time they were shut down.
This has truly been an astounding comeback, and I commend the Game Informer, Inc. team for not giving up, despite the state the industry is in. We live in a world where gaming news has become a vast dessert, dotted with individuals fishing for rage-clicks with click-bate titles. Much of the content on the internet is self-serving and shallow at best. Sure, no one knows if this will comeback story will prove to be a secure, long-term success, but I would find it asinine think negatively.
Game Informer, Inc. has transformed into a “pillar of light” for us in media. I am a copy editor and senior writer for Boss Rush Network so that I may share my passion of video games with others by writing up news, banters, reviews, and op-eds. Video games have so much to offer as an artform because it can generate so much discussion with people across the globe. I happily choose to volunteer my time to write, and I look to platforms like Game Informer, Inc. as examples of media with integrity. I want to be able to provide high quality, non-biased articles that generate a healthy and fun discussion. This is why their return means all the more to me here at Boss Rush.
Not only that, but I am a major fan of physical media. Not everyone is, but as someone that has hurtled past my thirties, I am of the age where I grew up with real newspapers and magazines. I recall begging my parents for a subscription for Nintendo Power. They only let me have one year’s worth, but let me tell you, I thumbed through those 12-months’ worth of magazines until the pages wore thin. The way news is published now differs from the 90s and early 2000s; but the images and commentary in magazines have always caught my eye.
I was late to hop on the Game Informer train, but I was quick to sign up for their magazine when I became an adult and was able to purchase whatever subscriptions I wanted. I recall the breathtaking cover art and cherished every issue–even when I moved to a digital platform. When they announced their closure, I zipped to the nearest GameStop to purchase every last copy of Game Informer that they had!
But back to my cliche “pillar of light” analogy. With the non-stop dissolution or buy-ups of studios and developer layoffs, a comeback story is exactly what the gaming industry needs. The staff at Game Informer Inc. has proven that one can persevere with sincere passion, hard work, and willingness to adapt. Things change. Downswings and “droughts” occur, but the lesson teaches us not to lose faith. And finally, love and support for a good gaming news outlet is still very much alive. In their YouTube video announcement of their return, Game Informer, Inc. Editor-in-Chief, Matt Miller, shared the outpouring of support from fans. Check it out for yourself:
Without getting any more “mushy”, I want to repeat my sincerest congratulations and gratitude to all those at Game Informer, Inc. Please continue to focus on high-quality articles and integrity in the industry. You aren’t just a media platform anymore…you are role models!
