The Nintendo Switch has been an undeniable success, but its longevity has become more of a curse in recent years.
It was no secret that Nintendo was working with older technology as a way to utilize a hybrid approach. That approach led to a lower performance than other consoles at the time, a gap that 2017 audiences didn’t mind because of the trade off.
Fans could take their console on the go and play great games wherever. Sure, it might not have ran as well as the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, but the portability made up for that difference.
Plus, Nintendo and some developers knew how to work around the limitations, giving us gorgeous games such as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom; Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3; and many others.
As the years wore on, those discrepancies became more noticeable, particularly as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S dropped. These consoles took steps forward, creating a wider gap in performance from the Switch.
Still, players didn’t mind as the COVID-19 limited production on those other consoles while the Switch had an established library for every one went into lockdown.
The last few years, however, that limitation gap has become much more noticeable. For some, this may not be an issue, but for others, it can be difficult to overlook.
Many games are still releasing across all three major consoles. As players decide which they should get, the Switch often gets downvoted because of those limitations.
Fans seem not as willing to overlook those differences. I saw this as Tales of Graces F Remastered released. Many players scoffed at the idea of playing on the Switch, citing performance issues despite the convenience of portability.
This complaint has grown over the past few years, showing that Nintendo may have waited a bit too long to announce a successor.
Now, I am not a video game marketing guru so I won’t pretend to know the reasoning for the announcement’s timing. That said, the gap in performance continues to loom as more third-party games continue to either skip the Switch or perform noticeably poorer on it.
Nintendo seemingly entered a twilight phase in 2023 with the release of Tears of the Kingdom. This has led to fewer high-performing games to complement low-performing titles.
Now, I am not condemning the Switch. Far from it as I think this console is fantastic and offers a great way to play. It’s more of a question of whether Nintendo made the right call in pushing the lifespan of the console as long as it did with no major upgrade.
Still, this is all moot as the Switch 2 full reveal is days away. It is a welcome upgrade and one that is sure to reignite players hopefully in the same way the original Switch did.
It couldn’t have come at a better time as we’re all ready for that upgrade as Nintendo continues to bolster its third-party support.
I just wish this happened about a year or two earlier.
