Dropping on the same day as Switch 2, Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) + Expansion Pack members will have access to certain GameCube games. This is the latest “virtual console” to arrive, and fans are psyched. Nintendo is launching with a limited line up, but we know more games are in the pipeline. What GameCube games do you want to see on NSO + Expansion Pack?
At present, we will see The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soul Caliber 2, and F-Zero GX arrive first. Other GameCube games teased for the future in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct are Super Mario Sunshine, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Super Mario Strikers, Chibi-Robo: Plug into Adventure, Luigi’s Mansion, and Pokémon Colosseum.
That’s already an impressive list and there are several GameCube games already enhanced or ported to the Switch in some capacity such as Metroid Prime Remastered, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania, and Pikmin 1 & 2 bundle; however, there are a few I would like to see (in no particular order):
- Super Smash Bros. Melee: Next to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Melee has drawn massive crowds and popularity, easily acting as one of the more beloved entries in the franchise. The more multi-player fun, the better!
- The Simpsons Hit and Run: While licensing could pose a challenge, this zany Crazy Taxi-like game is the chaos we need in our lives once more. And besides, who doesn’t love The Simpsons?
- Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem: We need more good psychological horrors available in the Nintendo ecosystem, and Eternal Darkness turned out to be a beloved title on the GameCube–leveraging a sanity meter– and unfortunately, it’s currently stuck on an old console.
- Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica: Most Resident Evil games are on the Nintendo Switch already, so I feel like NSO would be a great way to provide access to these two entries (until we get a Code Veronica remake…right Capcom?).
- WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Games!: This is the second WarioWare game in the series, and as I said above, I feel that the more party games on the Nintendo Switch 2, the better. WarioWare has such bizarre, zany “microgames” that friends and family would get a laugh out of.
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: This is an obvious choice, and with The Wind Waker arriving to NSO day one, I feel like Twilight Princess is a shoe-in. It’s just a matter of time.
- Mario Kart: Double Dash: Like the Super Smash Bros. series, while Mario Kart 8 has dominated, Mario Kart: Double Dash is still a fan favorite.
- Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2: Simply put, this highly stylized brawler needs to be revived for both the nostalgic gamers and the newbies.
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: I’m still surprised that we haven’t seen Metroid Prime 2 & 3 remastered after the first remaster and announcement of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. I feel like this is a must.
- Killer7: This is another cult-classic that brings excellent diversity to the NSO portfolio. Although modern gamers may feel restricted by the on-rails movement, the art style and fun puzzle mechanics make for intriguing gameplay.
- Skies of Arcadia: Legends: This RPG would be an excellent addition to the NSO library as an improved port of the Dreamcast version.
- Beyond Good and Evil: Technically, we already saw the 20th Anniversary edition release in 2024; however, this would be an easy and convenient means to access this cult classic.
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: This franchise needs more love. After Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, I think adding The Sands of Time will show newer players another side of Prince of Persia.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — Master Quest: Honestly, I’m more likely to get struck by lightning than Master Quest arriving to GameCube NSO, but I think the fun challenges would be welcome to Nintendo fans.
