The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was filled with exciting announcements and surprising reveals. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises was the reveal of The Duskbloods. This new title from Elden Ring developer FromSoftware promises a return to the gothic Victorian setting last seen in Bloodborne.
Fans have been clamoring for a sequel to Bloodborne for years. The 2015 game saw FromSoftware step out of their comfort zone mechanically and artistically, giving a speed boost to its polished action-RPG combat mechanics and crafting one of the greatest examples of Lovecraftian horror in video game history. However, the game’s publisher, Sony, has shown little interest in expanding on the title, leaving it to languish on the PlayStation 4 with no next-gen port or sequel to be seen.
Now, over a decade later, fans will return to the cramped streets, soaring arches, and inexplicably gigantic moon of a FromSoftware horror game in this legally distinct spiritual successor.
The announcement trailer for The Duskbloods gave us a taste of FromSoftware’s signature blend of gorgeous architecture and dignified monstrosities. However, this game appears to be leaning more toward H.G. Wells than H.P. Lovecraft, trading cosmic horror for Victorian sci-fi gadgetry. One character is decked out in a sort of steampunk Iron Man suit (complete with jetpack), while another appears to be able to transform into a dinosaur.
The trailer showed very little in the way of actual gameplay, instead focusing on sweeping landscapes and the occasional cinematic action shot. However, what little gameplay we did see showed great promise, with a variety of character builds and unique abilities like vampirism, moon magic and the aforementioned dinosaur transformation.
One of the biggest surprises of the trailer came at the very end, when it was revealed that The Duskbloods would be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. An interesting decision on FromSoftware’s part, given the way that Sony treated the console-exclusive Bloodborne.
The announcement trailer concluded with a note that they will be publishing a Creator’s Voice article on April 4, where game director Hidetaka Miyazaki will provide more details about the game.
