Bungie has officially pulled back the curtain on Marathon, its long-awaited sci-fi extraction shooter, revealing stunning gameplay and confirming a release date of September 23, 2025. Launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC with full cross-play and cross-save support, the studio—best known for creating the original Halo trilogy and the Destiny franchise—has reimagined its classic 1994 IP as a modern, competitive multiplayer experience. Marathon enters the extraction shooter genre, which, outside of titles like Escape from Tarkov and The Division’s Dark Zone, has seen limited mainstream success. For the uninitiated, extraction shooters are defined by high-stakes missions where players must collect valuable resources and intel, but only those who successfully escape with their loot get to keep it.
Set in the year 2850, Marathon drops players into the abandoned colony of Tau Ceti IV, a hauntingly beautiful world filled with the remnants of a lost civilization. As you navigate its dynamic, danger-filled environments, where threats come from both rival squads and the terrain itself, the game’s hyper-neon color palette and atmospheric design work in tandem to heighten the tension and immerse players in Bungie’s bold new vision.
We as the players will step into the roles of Runners, biosynthetic mercenaries competing solo or in three-player squads. The game blends PvP and PvE elements, creating a tense extraction shooter that emphasizes both strategic looting and survival packed with risk and reward. At launch, we’ll be able to choose from six unique Runners, each with their own play style. Think stealthy scout, brute enforcer, or speed demon. There’s also a deep loadout system, varied weapon archetypes, and a faction system with contracts and reputation to chase, unlocking everything from gear to cosmetics to expanded storage. And just like in Destiny, those cosmetics tell a story that contributes to the larger world.
One major shift from Destiny is the absence of power scaling or light levels. Instead, Marathon focuses on seasonal storytelling and world evolution, giving the universe a sense of ongoing change without affecting the competitive nature. You’ll earn persistent cosmetics and titles that carry across seasons, which honestly sounds perfect. A progression that respects your time and skill without creating barriers to entry is a lesson hard-learned from years in the Destiny grind. Bungie is really attempting to strike a balance with Marathon, making it approachable for new players without sacrificing depth.
Bungie is taking a premium approach with Marathon, opting out of the free-to-play model in favor of delivering a polished, content-rich experience from day one, and honestly, I think that’s the right move. My guess is that it will sit at a $39.99 UDS price point, similar to Sony’s other recent multiplayer outings in Helldivers 2 and Concord.
For those wanting to dive in early, a closed alpha is set to run from April 23 to May 4. North American players 18 and up can get in by joining the official Marathon Discord and filling out a quick survey. The test will feature two maps in Perimeter and Dire Marsh, alongside four Runners, a variety of weapons, and faction-driven objectives. Bungie is clear that this alpha is focused on stress-testing systems, not gameplay balance, but it’s still a great chance to get an early feel for the game’s mechanics and tone.
Marathon launches on September 23, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Are you excited or interested in Marathon? Let us know in Discord or in the comments.
