PAX East 2025: Fun Times are Guaranteed in Indie Title Compensation Not Guaranteed

Toge Productions is in attendance at present at PAX East 2025, showcasing several titles in the pipeline, including Compensation Not Guaranteed. It is a point-and-click adventure and sim game where you can choose to wield your administrative powers however you wish…with consequences.

Imagine you live in a country that just overthrew its last government. The new government is looking to procure land to develop on and is willing to pay compensation for that land; however, in order for citizens to receive their compensation, they need to have the correct documentation, and there’s no more time for them to make any changes. The game opens with you starting your first day of your new job as the person who will review those documents and approve or reject them of compensation.

Compensation Not Guaranteed, by Team Project Lunch, is a game that shares a lot of similarities to Papers, Please. You meet a citizen, review their documents, and if you find errors, you point them out and reject their land deed. The demo we played gave us three cases. The first one teaches you the basics, the second one teaches you what to do if you find mistakes, and the third one they let you make your best judgment based on what you learned.

Each character you meet is very colorful with personalities that will make you love or hate them. We purposely chose answers that flustered the first citizen, and it was hilarious to see their reaction (as well as a Toge representative’s reaction to my inhuman responses). It was a tutorial though, so in the end I was directed in approving their papers. However, the finished game will give you the freedom of approving or rejecting the land deeds and the story will branch off according to your choices. Also, you get to schedule citizens for different time slots, and that will also change how the story develops.

The game is still in development, but there is a demo out on Steam right now. If you liked Papers, Please, do yourself a favor and check this out.
