It can become pretty repetitive to keep playing certain games or one game for hours on end. I’m sure that many people have heard about burnout, when people just lose all motivation and effort to enjoy something. There’s even the case where players simply walk away from video gaming for a while whether because of personal issues or work.
It may be a hobby we love but it is certainly something that can take a lot of our time. When you’ve taken a break form something like video gaming, how do you get back into it? What can re-inspire your motivation and love for it?
Games have changed so much over the past decade. With new games constantly releasing, it can get overwhelming trying to rejoin the community. With beloved older games, it can be pretty intimidating trying to join their community as well, hard lines and strong opinions prevalent in such spaces.
For myself, I find that I have to start out small. I’m big on playing mobile games, but I’m not as much of a fan of the repetitive gameplay it can create. Yet, it’s what I go to when I feel like I’ve stepped away from the hobby to spend time somewhere else. Mobile games aren’t typically that complicated and they’re so easy to access that it makes it simpler for me to want to play them.
Recently, I went back to a game called Unison League. It had been years since I had last played it, and I know I really enjoyed it. The gameplay itself wasn’t complicated, and I found myself curious on how it had changed since it just celebrated its ten-year anniversary.
It was inspiring for me. I can’t really explain the joy or wonder of rediscovering the game. I learned my account was nine-years-old. It was still just as well-made as I remembered. Although it still suffered from a more repetitive gameplay like many mobile games, its unique classes and gear equipment made it stand out despite its age. As personal changes happened in my life that made me step away from video gaming, it was this mobile game that pushed me to go back.
Another way to get back into the hobby was to focus on a favorite game type. I’m a big fan of MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online role-playing games) which is why Unison League stuck out to me as an inlet to reinvigorate the hobby. It’s a type of game that I always loved yet found hard to enjoy as more and more MMORPGs released less than quality content.
It was something that felt a little more fresh for me as well since I had been so focused on playing open-world and simulation games. A little mix up from what I had been so used to doing. And I found it really helped. The best part about video gaming is that there’s many different genres and gameplay types. Players can pick whatever kind of game they know they love or try out something entirely new. It’s definitely an easy way to get back into video gaming when things start to feel repetitive or time has simply not been the kindest friend to enjoying hobbies.
Sometimes, it can be an emotional thing pushing you away from your hobbies. Sometimes, it’s a physical thing. Sometimes, it’s a thing entirely out of your control. When it pushes away something that you love doing like video gaming, it can be difficult to go back to it.
Start out with something small. Go back to something you loved about it or go somewhere entirely new that you haven’t explored. It’s a great way to get back into video gaming or any hobby that you enjoyed.
