The team behind the next installment of the Resident Evil franchise had the opportunity to expand on the main protagonist and gameplay during the June 26th Capcom Presents.
Director Koshi Nakanishi, Art Director Tomonori Takano, and Producers Masachika Kawata and Masato Kumazawa explained their intent and direction with the Resident Evil Requiem. They started with their core concept for RE9, which was “addictive fear“, where people pursue catharsis they experience when facing their fears head-on. The game was confirmed as an offline single-player experience that can be toggled between first or third person, depending on player preference. They wish to continue focusing on its roots–a true horror experience.

Grace Ashcroft, the FBA agent we saw in the announcement trailer during Summer Game Fest, is the protagonist, and was described as “…introverted and easily scared“. This led to the comment that, although they considered Leon Kennedy making a return, his personality and demeanor didn’t match the atmosphere and perspective they wanted to deliver to their audience.

The team also talked more about the settling. Resident Evil 9 returns to Raccoon City, 30 years after the missile strike. The titling of this entry was intentional, as Resident Evil Requiem is described as “…a eulogy to those who came before”. Raccoon City was the epicenter for much of the RE franchise, changing the lives of so many characters.

It appears that Nakanishi and others had much more to say that the Capcom Spotlight didn’t show. They teased clips with mentions of Grace’s mother and a change in policy…and instructed us to check out the full interview on their portal with your Capcom ID.
Speaking of 30 years, March 2026 is Capcom’s 30th anniversary of Resident Evil, and the team crafted Requiem as a love letter to the outbreak that started it all. Resident Evil Requiem releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Steam February 27th, 2026.
