During a recent livestream, Arrowhead Game Studios surprisingly announced that Helldivers 2 is officially launching on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, with full crossplay support across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. The news, shared in the official Xbox Wire post and accompanied by a new trailer, marks a major moment for both Xbox players eager to join the fight and for Sony’s evolving publishing strategy. Xbox fans will soon be able to join squads and battle across the galaxy alongside players from other platforms.
Sony’s recent multiplatform strategy has largely excluded Xbox, even as it brings select titles to other platforms through their publishing partnership with Bandai Namco. Games like LEGO Horizon Adventures, Patapon 1 & 2 Remastered, Freedom Wars Remastered, and Everybody’s Golf: Hotshots have all been announced for or released on Nintendo Switch, while Xbox has been left out. In contrast, Microsoft has fully embraced a multiplatform approach, bringing several of its own titles to PlayStation in recent months as part of a broader cross-platform push.
The arrival of Helldivers 2 on Xbox signals a possible shift in Sony’s thinking. Along with MLB The Show and Marathon, it suggests that Sony may be testing the waters with multiplayer-focused titles that benefit from large, cross-platform communities. As live-service games continue to grow in scale and cost, expanding to other platforms could become a more sustainable strategy for keeping those games alive and active.
Arrowhead’s Johan Pilestedt expressed his excitement in bringing Helldivers 2 to a broader audience and called on existing players to welcome the “new recruits” into the fold. With crossplay enabled, Xbox players won’t be fighting alone—they’ll be joining an already-established war effort.

Interestingly, August 26 also marks the release of Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation, creating a notable moment of crossover between the two platforms, whether by coincidence or quiet coordination.
