If you’ve played the latest Destiny 2 expansion, The Edge of Fate, and noticed a few characters sounding a bit off, you weren’t hearing things—just some new voices. Bungie recast several familiar roles to avoid launching a major release with missing dialogue. Unlike Episode: Heresy, where key characters and moments were completely silent, The Edge of Fate ensured everyone had voice acting, even if the voices weren’t quite what Guardians were used to.

The most notable change is Ikora Rey, now temporarily voiced by Deborah Wilson—best known to Destiny fans as the voice of Savathûn, the infamous Witch Queen and Hive God of Trickery and Lies. Other characters, including Orin and Chioma Esi, are also currently portrayed by temporary actors.
In their most recent “This Week in Destiny blog post (TWID),” Bungie has confirmed that these casting changes were only a short-term solution caused by the SAG-AFTRA voice actors’ strike. With the strike now resolved, the original performers are returning to the studio re-record the dialogue for the expansion. Although there is no confirmed timeline for when these updated performances will be integrated into the game, Bungie has committed to including them in a future update.
International Guardians may still encounter some inconsistencies, especially in non-English versions of the game. Certain characters might be silent or default to English dialogue, according to Bungie. To help preserve narrative clarity, subtitles and speaker names have been enabled by default across all platforms. As a reminder, you can customize subtitles and speaker names by size, color, background opacity, and visibility through the Gameplay menu.
Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is out now for $39.99 USD or your local equivalent on Xbox Series, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC. The expansion’s raid, The Desert Perpetual, launches July 19, 2025 at 10:00 AM US Pacific Time. Read our review for The Edge of Fate expansion here.
