Since Blizzard Entertainment’s free-to-play, team-based hero shooter, Overwatch 2, released in 2022, players have seen multiple changes throughout the video game in attempts to separate itself from its predecessor. The developers have been trying to keep up with what fans want from the game whether it’s making competitive changes, adding player vs. environment, bringing back loot boxes, nerfing heroes, buffing heroes, or, in the case of this Banter topic, adding more heroes.

Recently, there have been complaints surrounding cosmetics. From the first game to the second, Overwatch is a brand known for dressing its heroes up in a wide variety of skins: skins from collabs, skins based on the current season’s themes, skin re-colors, legendary skins, mythic skins, weapon skins, boring skins, ugly skins, pretty skins, etc. So many skins!

Despite the abundance of cosmetics in Overwatch 2, it’s obviously clear that not all the heroes are receiving the same amount of attention, love, or care. Whatever the reason may be, it’s something that has to change and fast.

There are a handful of heroes who constantly receive new skins all the time while others are seen without new options for months at a time. Venture, Lúcio, Baptiste, Zarya, Brigitte and some others are common victims of not getting new ones. While the poster kids for the game are drowning in them, namely Kiriko and Juno. This is evident from certain accounts existing, like Days Since Last OW Skin, where they keep track of how long heroes have gone without a skin with one of their recent posts stating it’s been 555 days since Lúcio has received a new skin. The account also has a public spreadsheet linked on their profile where they keep track of the data if you’re curious.

While I’m sure Blizzard drops skins based on pick rate and popularity for monetary reasons, we can’t ignore how unfair that is for the people who do play the characters that don’t have many favorable cosmetic choices. If they do get skins, it’s often… boring or lackluster.

And don’t get me wrong. Dropping certain hero skins knowing it will make money is not a problem. Blizzard is a company that has the right to make decisions that will put money in their pockets. That’s not a crime. Though, something has to change here. You can’t please every single player, but you can try at the very least and they aren’t showing a clear effort of trying.

Season 18 is coming up and the shop skins were revealed. Lots of valid opinions were shared online from what was shown. I’m curious what other Overwatch players think about this. What are the possible solutions you believe Blizzard can push out to combat their skin distribution issue? Do you think this is even important to the game?
