As a fan of obscure games and hidden gems, the Octopath series is one of those titles that really took me by surprise. I fell in love with the series in Octopath Traveler II, and in my second run-through of the game, I found complex, hidden parts of the story that isn’t as obvious. Do not be deceived by its charming and witty characters and their cute voice lines in combat. Beyond the surface of the game, there is an underworld of shadowy groups, treachery, and tales of ancient magic that rocked the world of Solistia. The only way to see is to search beyond the character’s chapters and explore everything the game has to offer, which is why Octopath Traveler 0 may very well be a hidden gem amongst new releases in 2025.
With the release of this new game, Octopath Traveler 0, I hope to find the story beyond the story. With the idea of making your own character as a protagonist this time around, I do have my doubts about the level of depth we may see. However, in contrast to the previous game, having eight total characters this time that aren’t temporary could actually be what I had been looking for in Octopath Traveler II. The class systems are back with the hope of multi-classing, but on top of all of that, we seem to have yet another surprise in store for us.
A new character in the trailer, Laurana, described as a “deacon who prays for the fading light” says a line of text I almost missed: “May the Sacred Flame light your path.” The Sacred Flame harkens back to the previous game in the series of one of Temenos, a protagonist, lines “May the Sacred Flame guide you.” Octopath Traveler games usually keep their worlds separate from one another, so it could be just a callback, but it could also mean that this Octopath world holds some reference to the previous ones.
Octopath Traveler 0 releases on console and PC on December 4th of this year, so I hope you can take some time to enjoy another golden JRPG.
