PAX West 2025: Interview with Director Katsu Tanaka About Obakeidoro 2: Chase and Seek

At PAX West 2025, Boss Rush Network got to spend some time with director, Katsu Tanaka, about his latest work, Obakeidoro 2: Chase and Seek.

Ed: Hello everybody, this is Eddie V from Boss Rush Network. I am here at the Obakeidoro 2: Chase and Seek demo and with the Director Katsu Tanaka, and I just played this fantastic, phenomenal, and funny game. How did the series originate?

Katsu: I wanted to have a game for a special event, and I witnessed everybody having fun. Originally, it wasn’t for sale, but since the special event was so positive, and everybody liked it at the event, we decided to make a version for sale. It was very successful.

Ed: I laughed while playing the demo when I was caught by the ghost. I also had fun playing the ghost and trying to get the other characters.  Did you expect the game to be funny when multiple people are playing it?

Katsu: Yes! I would like to have everything funny so that when you laugh, everyone who plays really laughs.

Ed: I admire the music. When the ghost is coming for you, it plays to a creepy and cool rock beat. How did you think about doing music cues in the game? How did you decide on the music?

Katsu: I changed the rhythm of the music so that players could feel the danger of being approached, and I wanted the tension to rise after that. Moreover, the sound of the music is different between humans and ghosts. When the humans come close, they receive a different kind of music. When the ghost comes closer, there is a different sound. These are funny cues and make the tension funny but scary in a light manner.

Ed: Will I be able to buy the soundtrack after the game comes out? I definitely enjoyed the music in the game.

Katsu: (laughs) Maybe in the future we will release the music.

Ed: Do you plan on releasing the game on the Nintendo Switch 2?

Katsu: Yeah, Switch 2 only. Exclusive.

Ed: Oh, congrats! I will definitely be buying a copy.

Katsu: Thank you very much.

Ed: Before I end this interview,  what is your go-to snack? Something that you like to eat or something that helps you relax?

Katsu: Yes. I really love to eat clams.

Katsu: Thank you so much for playing the demo and talking about the game.
