In a recent article by Nintendo Wire, the author highlighted some comments from Nintendo’s financial reports. These comments hint at the company’s dedication to continue creating cinema even beyond the 2027 Legend of Zelda movie. Far from just a game maker and publisher now, what Nintendo IPs would be most deserving of a movie adaptation next?

I don’t need to rehash how successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie was, and it was no surprise that a sequel was announced. Then, we have The Legend of Zelda in the works as a live adaptation of Nintendo’s action-adventure franchise. Lastly, we have the highly rumored Donkey Kong movie which, while only a rumor, makes sense and would not surprise anyone if/when it gets announced. With Nintendo going all-in on its commitment for multiple movies, it opens up a lot of opportunities, for better or for worse.
I think Pikmin is ripe for a movie and one of the most deserving because it is such an underrated series. There is so much love for Mario, Zelda, and Kirby, and popularity (and sales) for Pikmin tends to dwarf in comparison. It’s a bit unfair since the games have come such a long way, and Pikmin 4 was an absolute blast. However, this franchise may be a genuine candidate since Pikmin was already showcased in a short film, “Close to You”, that dropped in the Nintendo Today! app By Nintendo Pictures Co., LTD.

These adorable little creatures are quirky, cute, and can fit into a variety of premises and appeal to a wide range of age groups. A Pikmin move could focus on the adventures of Captain Olimar or expand on “Close to You” and have a Nintendo spin on Pixar’s Toy Story. It also doesn’t know hurt knowing that Miyamoto has a fondness for the Pikmin series.
Metroid would also be a stellar option for the silver screen. It is also underrated and less popular compared to many Nintendo IPs; however, they have a passionate fan base. Moreover, Metroid is gaining traction since the release of Metroid Dread in 2021 and upcoming hype for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond this December.

There are a lot of games in this series and lore to delve into, and even non-gamers could enjoy a thrilling sci-fi with a strong, female protagonist. I can picture a Metroid movie that tell Samus’ origin story or any of her bounty hunter endeavors. There are lots of set pieces, monsters, and tech that can make the movie an out-of-this-world experience.
This next one, hear me out, is 99.99% never going to happen but, wouldn’t be awesome if we turned Excitebike? Imagine a live-action movie surrounding motorcross racing with lots of 80s throwbacks? This could be for the older, nostalgic crowd. Besides, Sony turned their racing franchise, Gran Turismo, into a live-action film, and it scored fairly high amongst fans.

If Nintendo is serious about their movie pipeline, what franchises could they turn to outside anything Mario and Legend of Zelda? Please share your thoughts with us on our Boss Rush Facebook Group or our Boss Rush Discord.
