Square-Enix is about a month away from adding a new franchise to its HD-2D lineup and fans need to take notice.
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is set to release on June 18 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC. The upcoming action RPG will utilize Square-Enix’s famed HD-2D style, but with a combat system that many claim is similar to 2D The Legend of Zelda.
This means The Adventures of Elliot has a lot going for it, especially in a world that isn’t always the nicest to new games or franchises. This is why the upcoming game needs out love.
Of course, if this isn’t you type of game, it’s OK to just move along. That said, fans have clamored for more traditional style games that harken back to the SNES days, which The Adventures of Elliot seems to do.
It appears to sidle right on up to the likes of Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default as titles that hearken back to a faraway time. In fact, Team Asano is the key developer on this game and is also responsible for Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default, and Triangle Strategy.
This shows that this type of game is making inroads and quickly establishing itself among the more traditional player base. Team Asano wouldn’t keep this trend going unless it was seeing success.
That is why The Adventures of Elliot deserves your love. The gaming world needs more games like this to balance out the larger, cinematic titles and the best way to tell companies like Square-Enix that these types of games are welcome is to support them.
Now, you shouldn’t only support a game for the sake of the future. It also looks like Team Asano is taking some risks with The Adventures of Elliot, something for franchises should do.
The big reason we see near replicas of Call of Duty and Madden each year is because people eat them up. Developers and publishers don’t see a need to change things up if what they put out is selling.
The Adventures of Elliot looks to be a game that will push the HD-2D format and potentially shake up how it is used. This is a good thing and I, for one, would love to see more attempts like this.
Even if a game doesn’t always connect with me, I do favor them when they at least take a risk. I want to see more of it so I try to voice my support of that, even if that comes when the game is on sale.
I’m not advocating for blind loyalty here nor am I trying to come across as a shill of this game. I genuinely think it looks like a blast and the previews I have read make me excited for it to drop.
While The Adventures of Elliot may not be everyone, it does reflect an attempt from Team Asano and Square-Enix to at least try for smaller games that draw on a time when we fell in love with gaming. Don’t just sleep on this game because it seems unfamiliar or new.
