Back in July of 2024, a supposed leak of Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 surfaced online, code-named “Project Macondo.” The sequel to the beloved PvE squad shooter appeared to be a hero shooter with specific characters with unique abilities, a drastic departure from the player-customizable Marines with endless variations. These new heroes had abilities such as “ninja strikes” and weapons like “throwing axes,” bizarre inclusions in the world of Alien. Fans of the franchise understandably hated the changes, and word quickly spread online that the sequel to Aliens: Fireteam Elite was very much in trouble.
While it’s unclear if those “leaks” were fake or if Cold Iron Studios simply noted the uproar and switched back to the previous format, IGN’s recent previews of Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 came as welcome news to fans of the franchise. While the first game wasn’t for everyone (many complained about replayability and the lack of content), the game had a passionate following; and for those that cared deeply for the game, it was frequently listed as an all-time favorite.
Cold Iron Studios’ decision to return to the generic, but customizable Colonial Marine was absolutely the right decision. Instead of giving players preset “heroes,” the studio gave fans even more customizations and class abilities. The “Specialist Class” is sure to be a favorite for veteran players who want to mix and match abilities and finely hone squad strategy. The developers also focused on improving Xenomorph AI and adding in elements like fog and improved lighting to make the environment “feel more Alien.” Finally, adding a fourth member to the squad shows the studio listened carefully to fans and recognized the value in giving players what they’ve been asking for.
Sometimes, reinvention isn’t needed, especially in video games. Cold Iron Studios (and publisher Daybreak Game Company) are good examples for doing things right in an industry that far too often gets it wrong.
