Yet another patent filed by Nintendo was recently discovered by Mike Odyssey. Mike posted a video as well as on X of the latest find that his channel has surfaced. The patent had been filed in 2024 and made official June 9th, 2026. Yet another patent in the back pocket of Nintendo ready to be given life. Check out Mikes video.
The patent was filed by both Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuji Kondo who created what seems to be a merger of 2D and 3D map transitions. This patent more specifically focuses on the game space and the view in which the camera takes in that space. It will auto adjust to the player, make calculated decisions of the players surroundings, and focus on points of interest that may pop into view. This navigation within the players’ space can improve a player’s experience and not hider visibility, while allowing them to access a second screen to improve orientation within the world map.
The transition that occurs smooths out between the two views so that the player doesn’t become disoriented, confused, or maybe even sick with a quick motion between the views. I personally would be in favor of a system like this used in perhaps the future The Legend of Zelda title. An example where it would have benefited me was when I played Majoras Mask on the original 3DS hardware which does not have the extra nub joystick for the camera. I was in the first dungeon, and it was nearly impossible to get through it since I had to move Link in a circle to get the camera to follow. Boss fights and navigation were horrendous, and I never finished my playthrough.
As always, hundreds of patents are filed each month and for most they never come to fruition. Nintendo, as well as many other companies, create them in hopes to use these ideas in some big or small way. Looking at the overall patent that is before us I would have to say that we probably have already seen this in games like Donkey Kong Bonanza, but maybe improvements beyond that camera system are yet to come.
Are you excited at the potential of utilizing a much more robust overview for a future game? Do you think a new way to view or experience a future game will be that substantial? Are you excited to see where technology may create new experiences? Let us know your thoughts about the topic.
