LumenTale: Memories of Trey does a lot right, but one of its shortcomings is its lack of explanation around its systems.
One such area is the traits and how to fully use them in battle. These traits can make a big difference when you are battling a Lumen captain or the boss Animons, but the game leaves you to learn these on your own.
There is a tutorial that comes up but that’s not helpful when you are amid a battle and can’t remember what each trait does. Fortunately, you will pick them up though that will take some time.
That’s where this guide comes in to help you fully understand what the traits are and how you can use them effectively in battle.
What are traits?

Each Animon carries an elemental type. These are common elements such as electric, fire, water, ice, etc. There are also other more spiritual types such as anomalous, chakra, aura, and ancient. Every Animon carries one of these types and it’s usually obvious what that is based on their design.
Animon also carry a second designation called traits. or attributes. The game explains these as the emotion that arises when people view the Animon.
There are five attributes: Felices, Furor, Horrens, Mestus, and Sereum. Each one can add a bonus effect when you attack during a battle, but only if activated.
Traits are not immediately introduced to Trey until slightly later in the early goings. You will have had to make the narrative choice of going to Mythos or Logos first. Traits will be explained shortly after that.
What does each trait do?

| Trait | Effect |
|---|---|
| Felicis | Enables an Animon to slightly heal its allies after attacking. |
| Furor | Directly increases the damage a skill can deal. |
| Horrens | Neutralizes an opponent’s resistance, making an Animon’s next attack super effective if the opponent would have been defeated. |
| Mestus | An Animon uses a percentage of its HP to deal additional damage to its opponent. |
| Sereum | Considerably increases an Animon’s chance of dealing a critical hit. |
How to use a trait?
Players need to manually select when to use a trait in battle. Players can learn which trait their Animon has by checking the information screen outside of battle or looking for the specific icon next to the list of skills during battle.
In battle, each skill costs a number of SP to use during battle and the player has a set amount of each SP to use each turn.
When selecting a skill to use on any of your Animon’s turns, there will be a trigger to the left of the list of skills that shows the traits symbol. Clicking the designated button will activate the trait’s effect.

You will know if the trait is activated by if the skill is glowing with a wavy background. You will also notice that the skill has increased an SP in cost. When you attack, the trait’s sign will flash over the Animon.
Once the trait is selected, carry out the attack as you usually would. The effect should happen after the attack is completed. Note that effects will not happen automatically, you have to choose to activate the trait in the skill selection or else it will not activate.
You can use a trait as many times each round as your SP total will allow. That said, since this increases the SP used, it can drain your total SP if you are not careful.
I’ve found it most helpful when I need to use low-cost skills that don’t have a type attached to them. Another great place to use these is during a TP Action, which occurs when you fill your TP meter by landing critical hits or exploit elemental weaknesses in your opponent.

Since a TP Action doesn’t use your SP, it’s a great place beef up your skills with a trait without negatively impacting your SP.
All in all, however you use traits, it does add a fun wrinkle to an already robust combat system. It will take some time to figure out how best to use these, but once you master them, it can make a big difference in your tougher battles.
