Well, it’s happening, and apparently much sooner than some of us expected. In a PlayStation blog dated 7/1/2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that physical discs will no longer be made for games releasing on their platforms in 2028. Using the excuse of shifting consumer trends, this is a sign of the end times.
“In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.” –PlayStation Blog
Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications, wrote about Sony’s decision, citing that new games released after 1/1/2028 will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only; however, it will not impact existing titles.
The internet is already in an uproar.
I fully acknowledge the growing use of all things digital and/or streaming–inside and outside of the video game industry–however, interest in physical media still has a strong pull amongst consumers. Between nostalgic Gen X and Millennials and Gen Z celebrating all things “retro”, there’s still lots of love and interest in owning all things analog and other physical media.
According to Mat Piscatella, physical video game sales in the United States did hit a new rock bottom in 2025, totaling approximately $1.5 million. This has been the lowest total sales in 30 years. This trend and the numbers don’t lie and surely influenced Sony’s decision; however, the trend also shows something else: 2025 also experienced the “lowest rate in decline since 2021. Piscatella mentions the Switch 2 as a factor for this slowed rate of decline last year. However, with Sony’s decision, the rate of decline will only grow steep once more in 2028.

I’m not arguing that digital consumption isn’t taking over; however, there’s still a need, a desire, to own things that are tangible. Even if you aren’t pro-physical, Sony’s decision is a slippery slope to anti-consumerism. It isn’t portrayed in this manner, but as the saying goes, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”.
Don’t forget these recent decisions made by Sony as well, and tell me this doesn’t feel like anti-consumerism:
- Sony to shut down PS3 and PS Vita digital stores as soon as August 2026 in select countries through 2027.
- Sony to remove 551 purchased StudioCanal movies from Digital libraries this September, with no refunds offered. People who paid for these movies won’t be able to watch them anymore.
Microsoft has already leaned into digital media, and now Sony is going hard. Regardless of the argument over convenience and manufacturing, physical media will always guarantee ownership (not taking into consideration the nuances of digitally based updates; that’s a discussion for another day). Sony is such a large company and a vital platform for gamers that this change will only expedite the extinction of physical games.
The only saviors we have left are Nintendo (to a degree) and physical publishers such as [with links included]:
These companies work hard to put video game ownership into the hands of gamers with no strings attached. However, will they be enough to save physical media? I feel like we lost a major battle thanks to Sony. All I can hope is that gamers vote with their wallets and continue to purchase physical discs and cartridges while they are still around.
What do you think of Sony’s decision to go completely digital for games releasing on the PlayStation platform in 2028? Do you think Nintendo is the saving grace to keep physical alive?
