Numbers are starting to roll in for Star Fox‘s first week of launch. According to Famitsu, this Switch 2 title was the highest selling game in Japan for the week of June 22nd at 41,680 retail copies. Star Fox also topped physical game sales in the UK. These are promising numbers, and the possibility for future Star Fox titles becomes more feasible by the minute. If and when Nintendo releases the next game in the franchise, what should it look like?

For the uninitiated, Star Fox games have primarily been on-rail shooters; however, Nintendo dabbled in a 3D action-adventure style with Star Fox Adventures. Star Fox Adventures released in 2002 on the GameCube with a Metacritic score of 82. It was considered a commercial success although some criticism included deviating from the Star Fox “formula”. There are elements of exploration and puzzle-solving, almost akin to The Legend of Zelda. There are still segments on your Arwing, but this was Nintendo’s attempt to venture outside a shooter-only game.

I think a hybrid shooter and 3D action-adventure would be a wonderful next step in the Star Fox franchise. With refreshed graphics, sound, and voice acting, it could run when Star Fox Adventures could only walk. It is also early in the franchise reboot that newer fans will likely be more amenable to changes. There is a lot more flexibility for creativity in an Adventures-style game without totally abandoning its core identity as a shooter.

If Nintendo chose to continue making Star Fox an on-rails shooter, that wouldn’t necessarily be a poor choice either. However, Nintendo needs to keep Star Fox fresh, so it does not fizzle out again. You could see this in comments of naysayers when Star Fox 2026 released. The idea of Star Fox 64 was recycled several times, and the older fans want something different. If Nintendo’s next Star Fox game continues to be an on-rails shooter, let’s focus on an adjacent galaxy or place new anomalies in the Lylat system. Create new plot points and twists and expand the Star Fox universe. Nintendo could also beef up the experience and take a few lessons from Starlink: Battle for Atlas, which is an amazing Star Fox-like and even included Star Fox characters. Moreover, leverage whatever content with a possible Star Fox film!

I just hope Nintendo keeps up with the gorgeous graphics, amazing music, and sense of accomplishment. Seeing the bill to General Pepper after rolling credits made me feel like a badass, and it encouraged me to play again. I also hope Nintendo brings the spirit of replayability and branching paths. Lastly, Star Fox and the Lylat System are brimming with story and lore opportunities that shouldn’t be squandered. I would love to know more backstory behind Fox and his team, and even some of the other characters that made cameos such as Katt Monroe and Bill. Star Fox (2026) is just the beginning…
