Dead by Daylight has reached an important milestone in its nearly decade-long history with the introduction of its first Indigenous Survivor. Released as part of The Life Road chapter on June 25, the new Survivor, Shane “Giiwewigaabaw” Wiigwaas, represents a significant step toward broader cultural representation within the asymmetrical horror title.
According to developer Behaviour Interactive, Shane is an Anishinaabe attorney from the fictional Glass River First Nation. His backstory centers on restorative justice, emphasizing balance and healing over punishment—a philosophy rooted in many Indigenous approaches to justice. Rather than presenting Shane solely through the lens of survival, the character’s narrative highlights resilience, community, and a strong moral foundation before he’s pulled into the Entity’s Realm.
Authentic representation extends beyond the character’s written backstory. Shane is voiced by Dallas Goldtooth, a Mdewakanton Dakota and Diné actor, writer, comedian, and activist known for his work on Reservation Dogs, Fallout, and The 1491s. His involvement aims to ground the character in an authentic Indigenous perspective while bringing another recognizable Indigenous creative voice into mainstream gaming.
The chapter also features contributions from Anishinaabe artist Tsista Kennedy, whose artwork and cultural insight helped shape the visual identity of The Life Road. Collaborating with Indigenous creators throughout development demonstrates an effort to ensure the chapter’s representation extends beyond surface-level inclusion and into the game’s artistic direction.
Reacting to the News
Representation in video games has steadily improved over the past decade, but Indigenous characters remain relatively uncommon, particularly in major multiplayer titles. Shane’s arrival joins a slowly growing list of Indigenous protagonists and playable characters who reflect cultures that have historically been overlooked within the medium. While one character alone cannot solve the industry’s representation gap, Dead by Daylight‘s newest Survivor marks meaningful progress toward greater visibility.
As Dead by Daylight continues expanding its roster through original characters and licensed collaborations, The Life Road stands out not because of its horror premise, but because it places authentic Indigenous voices both in front of and behind the scenes.
For longtime fans, Shane “Giiwewigaabaw” Wiigwaas represents more than another Survivor to master—he represents an important moment in the ongoing evolution of representation in games.
