This week on Expansion Pass
Sony’s decision to phase out PlayStation disc-based releases by 2028 has sparked debate about the future of physical games.
This week on Expansion Pass, Edward Varnell and Corey Dirrig discuss the surprise announcement and how industry analyst Mat Piscatella doesn’t expect Nintendo to follow suit.
According to the Circana senior director, “Nintendo is going to be Nintendo,” arguing the company has a long history of making decisions independently of its competitors.
While physical game sales have steadily declined in the U.S. for years, Nintendo continues to perform well at retail, driven by strong Switch 2 hardware and software sales. Even with the introduction of Game-Key Cards, Nintendo appears committed to maintaining a physical presence for the foreseeable future.
