“She is a god with no love left for her people, nor do they have any left for her. Her followers hope only to be on her side when the day of her rebellion against the divine comes at last.”

This quote, said by fan favorite character Dainsleif, appeared in the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: Travail, a four-minute teaser trailer from Hoyoverse released on September 27, 2020. This trailer teased every single region in Teyvat, as well as prominent characters that will appear in each region. For six years, this quote and the above image, showing Fatui Harbringer Pulcinella and his followers, was all players knew concretely about the region of Snezhnaya and their goddess, the Cryo Archon.
Throughout Genshin Impact‘s story, the region of Snezhnaya has played a major role. In every other region, the Fatui, a group of diplomats and military soldiers, work to gather the Gnosis’s, the symbol of power from all other archons, to fuel the Tsarita’s plan to oppose the fate of the world. They have been our enemies, our allies, and sometimes both at the same time(especially in Nod-Krai’s storyline). Additionally, The Adventurer’s Guild, the place where players complete their daily missions and gather rewards, is headquartered in Snezhnaya, meaning that players directly interact with the region every time they play the game. Needless to say, expectations were high.
And on July 31, the expectations were met and exceeded.
Hoyoverse released its one-hour livestream celebrating the release of Snezhnaya where the developers discussed the upcoming Archon Quests, exploration features, fun events, and brand new characters that mark this momentous occasion six years in the making. While the new characters, events, and gameplay are all extremely exciting, the four-minute trailer introducing the first two acts of the Archon Quest is the main event that I want to discuss in this article, because the trailer is the epitome of years of worldbuilding and payoff.
Act Title Analysis

The first thing confirmed in the livestream was the name of the first two acts of Snezhnaya’s Archon Quest: Everwinter Without Mercy and Wraith’s Nocturne, the former also being the name of the patch as whole.
If you are a new player, these act names are just that: cool act names that set the tone for what happens in the story.
If you are an old player, these act names, the Act 1 name more specifically, made your eyes widen.
In the previously mentioned Travail Trailer, while Dainsleif was introducing each region, an act name appeared above each one. Every single act name mentioned for each region has been used in a patch for the game, and the one introducing Snezhnaya was Everwinter Without Mercy.

This is already an incredibly awesome payoff from that trailer, but it is so much more than that. For four out of the seven total regions, the act name introduced in the Travail trailer was used as the title for the finale of each region’s story.
Omnipresence Over Mortals ended the Inazuma storyline with the defeat of the Raiden Shogun, Masquerade of the Guilty ended with the Hyrdo Archon defying the destiny of Fontaine, Incandescent Ode of Resurrection saw the Pyro Archon saving Natlan from the Abyss and ending their history of war, and finally, Truth Amongst the Page of Purana concluded with the Dendro Archon sacrificing the fate system of the world to save Sumeru

To cap all of this off, the only other region whose Act 1 name matched with their teaser name is Mondstadt, a region where many important characters related to Genshin Impact’s endgame are either from or have some form of connection to. The fact that Hoyoverse is starting the first patch of their new region with the name they teased six years ago is already exciting enough.
And that’s not even talking about what the trailer actually shows us.
Trailer Discussion/Analysis
The Traveler, separated from Paimon throughout the entire trailer, is more desperate and emotional than we’ve seen him before. In fact, this is one of the only trailers where Paimon doesn’t speak at all. We get a sweeping look of Snezhnograd and the inside of the Korolevskiy Theater while Pierro, director of the Fatui Harbringers speak about the Tsarita’s grand design. After a brief introduction of the new playable characters Odette and Alyosha, gameplay of the Shadow Realm, a location outside of the gods sight, is shown. The Traveler is dodging and weaving between bullets, firing a gun with different elemental rounds.
If you had told a day one player back in 2020 that Genshin Impact was going to have a mode where The Traveler is shooting a gun and sliding like in Call of Duty, they would have looked at you like you were insane. This would even be unbelievable to a two year old or even someone who became a fan last year.
After showing the stunning Flamefeather Valley region and new fae monsters and fairies, it transitions to the Fatui arguing over Project Stuzha, the Tsarita’s grand plan. Here we see an in game model of Pulcinella, the Rooster, who was teased in the Travail trailer all those years ago. He looks completely unchanged from them and even alongside the intimidating and slimy Regrator, who debuted two patches ago, Pulcinella still has a powerful aura about him.
Fan-favorite character Childe seems to be rebelling against the project, the only Harbringer who seems to be doing so. Whether this goes well or not for him will be seen later. This tension is further amplified when Ronova, the Ruler of Death, shows up in front of Pierro, giving the players the first look of their models in the games engine, which look incredible. Even more so, the Traveler tries to attack Ronova to mixed results and seemingly in retaliation, Ronova fires an attack at Paimon, who is lying down and sick, while the Traveler surges forward to stop it.
The identity of Paimon has been a constant topic of discussion since the game released, with some saying that she is the missing Ruler of Space Asmoday and others claiming that she is a piece of the Heavenly Principles, current ruler of Teyvat. Did Ronova attack Paimon because she knows something about her? Or was it because she knew that it would upset the Traveler? The trailer cuts before that answer is revealed.
The final shot of the trailer is the Tsaritsa sitting on her throne with her attendants Vesna and Danica. The camera freezes over as Pierro narrates: “Our goal is the Heavenly Principles”. A perfect ending to a masterclass of a trailer.
Conclusion

I have been a fan of Genshin Impact since it first launched in September of 2020. I remember watching the Travail Teaser and letting my imagination run wild with what each region would look like. I was stuck inside my house, sick with COVID, playing Genshin as that was the only thing new at the time. I don’t have as much time as I did back then, so I’ve been more watching streamers play it than playing it myself. The game’s story, world, and scope has evolved so much since then, looking back at old trailers is looking at an entirely new game.
That’s why this Snezhnaya trailer hit me as hard as it did. It not only reminded me of how much Genshin has changed. It reminded me of how much I changed as well throughout these six years.
I was a senior in high school when Genshin came out and now I am a grad student filled with happy and sad memories. But throughout those memories, Genshin and the world of Teyvat has been one constant source of happiness for me. And all of this payoff given in the special program and the Snezhnaya trailer is validation for that happiness and support.
Winter is coming to Genshin Impact on August 12, 2026.
And it will be an ever-winter without mercy.
