I usually pick up a physical copy of the latest Call of Duty game a few months after it has been released and it may take another few months to take a day to download the always lengthy amount of data to even begin playing. Joking aside, I usually play the campaign first before trying the other modes. I usually enjoy trying out the different mechanics the game has to offer. However, after downloading Call of Duty Black Ops 7 main 120 plus GB download, I had to then download another 10 GBs for the campaign. I can look past the size of a file, but poor game design choices, I cannot.
The campaign is set up like you are going to play multiplayer, which the one feature that this campaign offers is the opportunity to play with up to 4 players simultaneously online together. Not a bad feature, but that is where it stopped for me personally and I play single player. Let’s review some of the design choices that put the “Doodie” in Call of Duty.
The first thing I noticed was no pause feature, and though I can see that in the online multiplayer aspect of playing the campaign, as a single player this was a big mistake. When someone needed my help, I had to hide somewhere hoping when I got back, I wasn’t deceased. This led to my second issue, the online cutting out during a mission, which at first I was like that’s not a big deal, I will start off at the last checkpoint but wait they don’t exist. So here I am trying to play a game, I can’t pause, I can’t save, I must have a pristine internet connection, or it cuts out. On mission 7 Fracture, I had to replay this mission 4 times because of online issues and one time I had started to unlock a door, and I had to punch in the numbers I received a message while trying to unlock it that due to inactivity it sent me to the lobby. What kind of design choice is that?
As a parent, this campaign was the least friendly in terms of precious time. Time wasted from no save options, with no pause feature, inactivity, and internet issues. What is also frustrating is fighting a boss and I do not want my child to watch me play these types of games. If they come in by me while playing, I had to shut off the television and with no pause feature or significant amount of time the mission would cut to the lobby making you replay what you already accomplished. Do better with simple features to your games Treyarch.
As a parent would the lack of features that I mentioned be a deal breaker? When was the last Call of Duty game you played? Should the tie in of multiplayer campaigns be severed to allow pausing and inactivity mishaps from occurring. Let me know your thoughts on this topic.
