Five Unique Empire Builds for Stellaris 4.4

3–4 minutes

With the release of the Stellaris 4.0, the number of unique empire playstyles has grown tremendously. While many content creators have already discovered powerful meta builds for the game, the following list intends to showcase some less frequently discussed builds, ones that lead to unique gameplay. In many cases, these are not necessarily that good, and may not hold up in multiplayer or on Grand Admiral difficulty. Even so, I’ve had a lot of fun playing these B-team interstellar empires, and I hope you enjoy them too.

1. Rootful Partnership

This build centers around the Fruitful Partnership origin, which offers an alternative method of colonization: piggybacking off Tiyanki space fauna to spread the seeds of your empire across the galaxy. It also pairs the negative trait of rooted, which heavily penalizes resettlement with the Subsumed Will civic, which negates the unity cost of resettlement. Invasive species allows for a significant boost to habitability and pop growth speed. And with Mycorhizal Ideal, those planets can eventually be converted into highly productive Gaia worlds.

Some alternative species traits you might consider include Genetic Memory, although in my experience, Genetic Memory is far too slow to negate the habitability penalties of the random planets that the fauna drop you on.

2. Socially Autocratic Introverts

This build pairs some traits available through the Under One Rule origin with Inward Perfection to give you an empire that physically cannot make first contact with other civilizations. Nobody can bother you if you never answer their messages, and you couldn’t even if you knew how. The only thing that matters is making your perfect dystopia. Make sure to take the Intolerant trait to reduce those envoys to zero.

3. Distinguished Aviary

This build aims to stack advantages to build the best Commanders possible, through the traits of Spatial Mastery, Loyalty Circuits, Enhanced Memory, and the Cyber Commando trait unique to the Hard Reset origin. Hard Reset, in addition to giving access to some machine traits, also provides a worthy challenge to test those commanders’ mettle, and the Scavengers civic makes it easy to fill up your fleets.

4. Eager Exploders

The Doomsday Origin just isn’t difficult enough! Let’s add on the Eager Explorers civic. This is perhaps one of the most difficult challenge origins that I can conceive of. Due to delving too greedily and too deep, your civilization has doomed your homeworld to explode between 35 and 45 years from the game start. But even worse, your people managed this impressive feat with primitive technology. You don’t even have proper faster than light travel or a complete understanding of the scientific method. And should you survive, you’re liable to turn your new colony into a cesspool almost as bad as your old homeworld, thanks to the Relentless Industrialists Civic. If you get really unlucky, you might not even be able to leave your home system if neighboring star systems are too far away.

5. Knights of the Toxic Workplace

This is in tough competition with the Eager Exploders build for the worst possible empire start. It’s the first build I’ve ever played where my empire’s economy starts categorically negative. The combination of Noxious and Repugnant is brutal to your amenities economy. With the Hard Reset origin, you have 10 years or so to prepare before amenities and crime issues annihilate your planet, allowing you to place a precinct or luxury residence, perhaps. But that is not the case with this build. You start in a significant shortage right off the bat. Only your undead employees give your economy some relief.

I issue this build as a gauntlet for any player who claims to be a Stellaris veteran. Good luck.

What about you? Do you have a deliberately challenging build you like to play? Let us know in the comments or on the Boss Rush Discord.
