Today, Nintendo added a new system update to the Nintendo Switch 2. Beyond a few minute quality-of-life (QoL) improvements to GameChat, Nintendo also updated the Switch dock to support VRR (Variable refresh rate) when playing in that mode. However, what will end up being the hardest hitting part of the update for many who hold their memories of the Wii and 3Ds eras dear will be the added BGM to the Switch 2’s Mii Maker: the tracks for the Mii Channel from the Wii, and the Mii Makers from the 3Ds and Wii U were added.
This addition admittedly is just menu music, yet it is still impactful to those that grew up engrossed with these systems. I spent a ton of time making Miis on the Wii. They dotted Wuhu and Wedge Island in Wii Sports Resort, they spectated your sports matches, and you saw them living life when playing the Island Flyover mode. They also spectated your races in Mario Kart and made some games of that era feel a lot more lived in. Even on the 3Ds, you had the Mii Plaza where your Miis would actively be a part of some of the StreetPass games included. I will never forget creating a bunch of fictional Miis with their own made-up personalities, as well as Miis based on friends and family back when I just started middle school, and I did so alongside my brother which turned it into a more social activity.
Adding these BGMs to the Switch 2 means Nintendo hasn’t forgotten about the charm they’ve given their software and operating systems during this era. Sure, these are generally mundane stuff for most systems, but Nintendo has a track record of giving these elements of their consoles character, and that is heavily appreciated by people like me who loved the Wii and 3Ds era.
