Rejoice any Nintendo gamers who also happen to be huge fans of the Witcher series (both games and books) because The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, and a new trailer was shown off for the game at the September 9th Nintendo Direct. The remastered version coming to Switch 2 wasn’t exactly confirmed by this Direct however, as it was shown to be arriving onto the platform about two weeks ago during Gamescom. Those who already have the base game on Switch 2 will get the upgrade for free, which is a fantastic move by CDPR to maintain goodwill with their audience.
The Switch 2 version seems to be special. This console has already demonstrated that it can handle many large titles at clear fidelity and decent to good performance. Some big third-party titles run at 60fps on the console, such as Resident Evil Requiem, which targets 60 but sometimes drops into the 40s. There is also the case of Cyberpunk 2077, a technical marvel and a piece of software used to benchmark, and stress test the capability of computers, which has a quality mode at 30fps and a performance mode which targets 40fps.
For a game like The Witcher 3—one from 2015 yet still very impressive today—the Switch 2 proves that it’s a console that can handle it, even in handheld mode, on its tablet-like chassis. It’s magical to be able to play through an impactful story moment, taking advantage of the gorgeous graphics and performance thanks to the systems spectacularly enhanced hardware (when compared to the Switch 1), and then being able to knock out a few side quests in bed, or while sitting at the living room couch with the family. This system offers a truly flexible way to play, especially if you’re an adult with adult responsibilities.
On the Red Stream, CD Projekt Red confirmed that handheld mode is a 720p, 30fps experience, whereas if you have a 120 Hz television, the remaster will run at a resolution of 1080p and 40fps. They also added some light motion controls to enhance the immersion for Nintendo players that enjoy motion control gaming.
