Resident Evil: Village–Review

3–5 minutes

Warning: The following article contains plot, story, and gameplay spoilers for Resident Evil: Village. If you haven’t finished the game and don’t want anything spoiled, please bookmark our page and enjoy at a preferable time. Thank you!

Resident Evil has been one of those series that I have always loved growing up. Up until now, the series has been through many unique phases, and this one is no different. Back when the series first was introduced in 1996, it was a third person survival horror. That’s when I first fell in love with the series. Since then, we have been getting a feel for the series in its first person stage since Resident Evil 7, and it keeps getting better with each game. I’m going to be going through some of the key points that stuck with me throughout this playthrough.

Gameplay

Resident Evil: Village is similar to Resident Evil 4 in terms of the whole village atmosphere. This Resident Evil game is in the first person perspective; and even though I’m not the biggest fan of first person games, I have gained a whole new respect for this game as far as the newer titles are concerned. I think that the first person element adds on to the in-your-face horror. I also appreciate how balanced the action is in this game. At times it may seem like you are in a safe space while roaming the halls, but there are a lot of moments that had me jumping out of my skin and some were even back to back jumpscares. I had to pause the game a few times to catch my breath.  If you are familiar with older Resident Evil games, you will be no stranger to puzzles; and this game has plenty of them for you to solve. As you continue to explore, there will be various puzzles that you will encounter, which also means you will be doing some backtracking–also not that new to the older fans of the series. I love that we can buy upgrades for weapons, just like some of the older titles.

Story

It seems like poor Ethan Winters can’t catch a break. If you played Resident Evil 7, you would know that Ethan Winters is married to a young lady named Mia. In Resident Evil: Village, the young couple moved to Europe several years after the events that occurred in Resident Evil 7. As the couple is getting ready to have a nice evening together, the house is overrun and we see Mia gundown by Chris Redfield. Ethan then wakes up and finds himself in the titular village and soon after the fun begins. Each boss that you encounter takes on a whole different feel and with each area that you encounter, no section feels the same. That is what I loved most about this game. This was a group of Resident Evil games blended into one.

Final View

Overall, I really enjoy the game, and I am excited to see where this story leads us in the future. I highly recommend that people give this game a chance. I wasn’t open to a first person Resident Evil game until I really sat down and played this game. I honestly kept getting pulled in as the story went on. Being a Resident Evil fan, I take each installment for what it’s worth and this one is no different.

One of the most memorable aspects to me is the whole is the environment. This game is so beautiful and it makes me want to just take my time and explore everything that I can. When I would travel through dark areas, I could feel the chills in the air, and I loved every moment of it.

Another aspect that I enjoyed in the game was the Ethan’s reactions throughout the gameplay. He had so many different emotions, and it really made his character stand out to me. I have played some first person games where the character barely had a personality, but I connected with him on so many levels.

Lastly, I loved the story. Not even 30 minutes into the game, all hell had broken loose, and it was just a continues roller coaster ride of events that unfolded throughout the gameplay.

There is so much to explore in this game and to be honest it’s longer than the previous Resident Evil titles; and I cant wait to jump back in and explore this whole game again. I have been enjoying the direction this series has been going in, and I am looking forward to the next chapter in the upcoming Resident Evil series. This game is a 8/10 in my book.
