E3 2021 attempted to return strong after cancelling its event last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and although vaccines are rolling out, this year’s showcase launched on a virtual-only platform.
A portal system was created, allowing fans to sign-up and create an avatar, while those providing media coverage was given early access by one week. A few of my colleagues experienced some portal issues. I did as well to the point where I gave up and watched the livestreams through Discord with friends. The four day event itself was filled with highs and lows from several developers and publishers. Our own Eddie V. provided an excellent recap in this review article.
There are many benefits to an online conference, from content access at your fingertips to the absence of long lines and additional expenses. E3 2021 allowed fans to follow their favorite developers from the comfort of their home. People have speculated if E3 has become obsolete, and perhaps the transformation to an all-virtual event could pump some life back into this gaming showcase.
After this year, I believe E3 would need some form of virtual access going forward; however, I hope that they resume at a physical location as well. E3 could provide the primary showcases as a livestream through the portal, and save additional Q&A’s or exclusive events at the conference. If E3 can focus more on celebrating the gaming industry and its fans, the in-person conference could prove successful with social events, demos, and SWAG. I feel that this hybrid approach could keep E3 relevant and engaging to media and fans alike.

Which path do you think E3 needs to take to remain successful? Would it be unwise to host the conference in-person again? Let us know in our Discord channel!
