Game Review–Sky: Children of Light

2–3 minutes

ThatGameCompany which produced Flow, Flower, and Journey on Sony Consoles, took flight on the Nintendo Switch with its free-to-play game Sky: Children of Light, which released June 29, 2021.

Overview:

Sky: Children of Light, an action-adventure game with light role-playing elements, originally came out on mobile for the iOS in July 2019 and Android in April 2020. The game was free with microtransactions available for various purposes. The game has seven differently themed areas to explore, with each representing a different stage in life. After exploring each level, you can access it again from a central hub, rightfully named ‘Home’. You wear a cape that allows you to fly and discover beings who give you winged light throughout your adventure. Certain beings also will let you unlock and upgrade energy, access flying upgrades, and receive currency towards items like hats, hairstyles, and capes. The game focuses on a social aspect as well; you will come across other players in the game, and you can unlock more items when interacting with others.

Sky: Children of Light has 4 different currencies that you can slowly acquire or pay to obtain them. The main currency is called “Candles” which is used to exchange with other players or Spirits in the game. Other currencies include “Hearts,” “Ascended Candles,” and “Seasonal Candles,” all of which unlock various items, including limited time exclusives. For a free game, this has a decent way to bring people back to play.

My time playing Sky was both filled with wonder and a slight bit of confusion. Such a plethora of beautiful landscapes and haunting music mixed with some pondering in the beginning of how you partake in this journey. As you traverse the seven different worlds, you learn what you must do and find different ways to accomplish what you seek. Just like in life, we don’t always know the way. We must either make are own path and find its meaning alone, or we can interact with others to help us shape our coarse along the way.

I wanted to express my thanks and to shoutout Vincent Diamante, a composer, who has made yet another amazing soundtrack for this game, with over 30 tracks to enjoy and experience. Vincent also worked on Flower from ThatGameCompany and more recently Skullgirls. Take the time to listen to what he has to offer to participants in this game.

Final Rating

Sky: Children of Light was a chill game overall, with a few tense moments. If I was going to give it a rating it would be a (4/5) experience for me, but its definitely not for everyone. If you have a Nintendo Switch or even a mobile device, you can go download this right now and experience it yourself. In the future, I hope That Game Company will bring more unique gaming experiences to the Switch and other mediums. Like Cervantes said in his book Don Quixote, “The sky’s the limit.”
